The 2026 Chinese Grand Prix delivered a memorable result for Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton: the seven-time world champion claimed his first podium with the Scuderia di Maranello. This third-place finish comes after a challenging first season in red, marked by technical difficulties, adaptation to a new team, and results that often fell below expectations. In Shanghai, however, something seemed to change: Lewis Hamilton rediscovered his rhythm, aggression, and, most importantly, his smile, playing a central role in an intense and spectacular race filled with close battles, including a fierce duel with his own teammate. This performance sent an important signal to both the team and the fans, who had long been eager to see the British driver once again on the podium wearing Ferrari colors.
Lewis Hamilton spoke first about the race itself and the on-track battles, also reflecting on the performance of Mercedes and the victory of Andrea Kimi Antonelli, with whom he shared the podium.
“First of all, huge congratulations to Kimi, I’m incredibly happy for him, and it’s an honor for me to share this moment with him. He has taken my seat in a great team, congratulations to Mercedes for that—they are very strong at the moment. We have a lot of work to do to catch up to them, but I’m really pleased. We had a great start, I tried to keep the Mercedes drivers behind, and just the battle alone made it one of the most enjoyable races I’ve experienced in a long time, if not ever. The battle with Charles at the end was fantastic as well, wheel-to-wheel, tough but fair. It’s really fun, we need to keep pushing, and I had never seen so many people here in Shanghai, so thank you very much.”
The British driver then commented on the most delicate moment of the race, when the close duel with his Ferrari teammate threatened the possibility of contact between the two cars.
“Yes, at one point we touched, but it was a very light contact, so everything was fine. This is the nature of racing: you have to drive hard and fight. I have to give huge thanks to the entire Ferrari team, everyone in Maranello, for bringing us back into this position. It’s not exactly where we want to be, because we want to be at the front with the Mercedes drivers, but we have a great platform to build on, and we need to literally push flat out. So, many congratulations and a big thank you to everyone at home.”
Lewis Hamilton’s breakthrough in Shanghai marks a psychological turning point for the 2026 season. After spending much of 2025 finding his feet within the unique culture of Maranello, this podium proves that the “Hamilton-Ferrari” partnership is no longer just a marketing dream, but a competitive reality. His ability to fend off a driver as naturally fast as Charles Leclerc—while managing the complex energy deployment of the SF-26—suggests that the veteran’s racecraft is as sharp as ever. While the 25-second gap to his successor Kimi Antonelli shows the mountain Ferrari still has to climb, the Briton’s renewed “happiness” is the best engine the Scuderia could ask for. As the paddock prepares for the next phase of the championship, the focus now shifts to whether the engineers can provide the seven-time Formula 1 world champion with the extra tenths needed to turn these hard-fought third places into a race win.
