Red Bull Racing Dutch driver Max Verstappen will start from P1 later today in the Formula 1 Sprint Austria, which will determine the starting grid for tomorrow’s Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg.
The Dutchman was slightly faster than the two F1-75 cars of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz in the final flying lap of the qualifying session that took place yesterday at the Red Bull Ring to secure pole position. His Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez finished in fourth place, but will have to start today’s Sprint race from P13 due to the fact that his Q3 lap times were deleted as well as his best Q2 time, which was set over track limits.
Mercedes had a disastrous final part of qualifying: in Q3, both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell were involved in crashes that forced their mechanics to work during the night and get their cars repaired. George Russell will still line up fourth, ahead of the competitive Alpine and Haas cars, with Hamilton back in ninth.
