Scuderia Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel has been awarded “Driver of the Day” for the 2017 Canadian Grand Prix after his impressive fight back up the field. The four-time Formula One world champion began the race in Montreal second on the grid but dropped to fourth immediately after the start, as he damaged his front wing after being hit by Max Verstappen’s Red Bull.
An earlier stop to replace his front wing dropped him to 18th place, but Sebastian Vettel rallied back up the order on a two-stop strategy. He gained a place late on when his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen cut the final chicane, and was then involved in a close scrap with the two Force India cars. The Scuderia Ferrari German driver managed to eventually pass both Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon and thus finish in fourth place, right behind the final podium spot. The Driver of the Day award is voted for by the fans from the half-way point of the race, with Sebastian Vettel once again picking up the most votes after his performance at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
It is Sebastian Vettel’s fifth time winning the award this season, having previous received the most votes in Australia, Bahrain, Spain and Monaco. His title rival Lewis Hamilton managed to easily win for Mercedes in Canada, leading a 1-2 finish for the team with Valtteri Bottas second.
