The FIA is facing an unprecedented internal crisis: a shocking letter accuses the organization and its president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
Never before has the FIA’s credibility been so scrutinized, largely due to Mohammed Ben Sulayem. According to The Race, the governing body’s leadership will convene in Macau to discuss recent amendments to the statutes, proposed by the president himself.
Among the proposed changes is the exclusion of potential presidential candidates if their professional background raises any doubts about their credibility.
The Austrian Automobile Club (OAMTC) sent a letter to FIA members within the World Council for Automobile Mobility and Tourism (WCAMT), warning them of the consequences if such revisions are approved.
The letter, first reported by Reuters and later seen by The Race, states: “We appeal to all members to support our motion aimed at removing the vote on the proposed FIA statute changes from the agenda of the General Assembly.”
The OAMTC argues there is no “urgency” to introduce such changes. If approved, they risk further damaging the FIA’s reputation for competent and transparent governance.
FIA: Is escalation a real threat?
The association questions whether it is merely a coincidence that the proposed changes align with Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s intention to run for re-election. “If there is even the slightest risk that these changes could appear to benefit the current FIA administration, rather than the FIA itself, then they should not be adopted,” the letter continues.
The letter reveals growing concern over a potential political crisis escalating within the Federation. The OAMTC also highlighted that a divide already exists within the governing body: “The FIA’s credibility as an organization has already been undermined by repeated missteps and failures in governance.”
These issues have arisen from a “system of governance that is not functioning properly.” The root cause? A lack of internal debate.
In recent months, there has been a steady exodus from the FIA. It is no longer a secret that the political body is in troubled waters. The next presidential elections are scheduled for December: we will soon see how the situation evolves.
