The FIA’s fight against swearing and foul language by drivers in categories under its jurisdiction has likely reached a focal point and, at the same time, an important moment of course correction.
In the past few hours, the president of the International Automobile Federation, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, has indicated that the much-discussed Appendix B of the FIA International Sporting Code could undergo changes soon.
This comes after talks held by the FIA with many representatives of the drivers’ associations competing in the 7 main categories under FIA jurisdiction, including those of Formula 1 and WRC.
“Following constructive feedback received from many drivers competing in the 7 FIA championships, I am considering making improvements to Appendix B. As a former rally driver, I better understand what the drivers have told me.”
“Appendix B is a key part of the International Sporting Code and is central to helping us ensure that our sport is accessible to all families.”
“Humans make the rules and humans can improve them. This principle of continuous improvement is something I have always believed in and it is the beating heart of what we do at the FIA,” wrote Mohammed Ben Sulayem on his social media pages.
Appendix B of the FIA International Sporting Code, much discussed in recent months, states: “The stewards have the authority to decide which penalty to apply in case of a violation of the FIA International Sporting Code and/or applicable FIA regulations.”

“The stewards have the power to consider any mitigating and/or aggravating circumstances, as well as the nature and location of the event, to tailor the penalty to the specific situation.”
This, therefore, will be modified following the protests of several drivers after the most debated penalties, those given to Max Verstappen in Formula 1 and Adrien Fourmaux in the WRC. All drivers competing in FIA categories will benefit, but it will be interesting to see how far the FIA will be willing to go to satisfy the drivers and where the new boundaries will be set regarding foul language.
