Recently, Scuderia Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto has urged the FIA to make sure they are able to closely monitor how much the teams spend as they attempt to develop the car and bring upgrades during the 2022 Formula One season. The Maranello team should introduced its first major upgrade at the Imola circuit, as the Italian sides wants to reduce weight and gain a few tenths which could prove decisive.
A lot of things have changed ahead of the 2022 Formula One season: the cars are bigger and heavier than given the new technical rules and regulations which have marked the return of ground effect aerodynamics. As a result, the weight limit on the new challengers was therefore raised to 795kg, while the budget cap was lowered by $5 million to $140 million.
It is no surprise that teams are fighting against both as they attempt to get their weight down without having to spend too much of their available budget, which will be a key factor for Scuderia Ferrari and Red Bull in their battle for the world titles, especially in the second part of the championship.
The Italian side is also working on a new floor specification which should further improve the porpoising issue, by allowing the Maranello team to raise the ride height of the F1-75 car. Ferrari will try and implement this update without adversely affecting their aerodynamic proficiency, and it should therefore solve the bouncing problem encountered especially by Carlos Sainz in Saudi Arabia, while also improving the pace which has served them so well in the first two races of the 2022 Formula 1 championship.
Given the fact that updates begin to come thick and fast as we get closer to the first European race, Scuderia Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto believes the FIA has to make sure there is a system in place which can ensure financial compliance under the more stringent budget cap.
“The competition front shifts from now onwards: when you have two cars as similar in performance as Ferrari and Red Bull, each package will weigh because a tenth or two will make a difference at this point in the season. There is a cap budget on which we are limited and I am insisting every day with the FIA for them to carry out the checks, because if these do not happen we risk to somehow offset the final result.” – the Ferrari Team Principal explained.

FIA head of single-seater technical matters, Nikolas Tombazis, responded to Ferrari’s observations, stating the motorsport governing body will make sure there is a fair championship fight: “Our first objective is to ensure that the championship is clean, we want those who deserve it to win Today’s regulations require much more control resources: now we have to inspect what teams do at home as well. “But for financial controls we have a capable team led by colleague Federico Lodi. Mattia can rest assured, we are doing everything to keep the situation under control. We have tax experts who check the balance sheets and the parts that are mounted on the machines to make sure we are billed correctly.” – Nikolas Tombazis explained.
