The former Ferrari president addressed the topic of F1 battles, issuing a warning to the FIA. For months, the International Federation has faced criticism for its inconsistent application of regulations. Drivers have called for a team of “permanent stewards” to ensure consistent judgment in every situation.
On-track duels are the essence of Formula 1. The spirit of motorsport lies in battling rivals through overtakes, daring braking maneuvers, and moves worthy of legendary drivers. These moves, though sometimes extreme and skirting the edges of fairness, should not lead to penalties from race stewards as long as they stay within the rules.
The rulebook defining the limits of wheel-to-wheel combat grows with new additions each season. A few months ago, Max Verstappen quipped that drivers might as well carry the entire rulebook in their cars to understand what is and isn’t allowed. Adding to the problem is the inconsistent application of these rules, as different stewards apply different standards, often causing confusion.
Luca di Montezemolo Urges the FIA: Protect F1 Duels
Speaking on “La Politica nel Pallone” on Radio GR Parlamento, former Ferrari president Luca Cordero di Montezemolo shared his views on penalties: “F1 is about duels. What would they have done during the battle between [Gilles] Villeneuve and [René] Arnoux? Put them in prison? I think things are being taken too far, both in terms of physical contact and track limits.” – the Italian pointed out.
“Formula 1 is becoming like a precision watch. We need to make room for emotion, courage, and the skills of the drivers, who shouldn’t have to worry about millimeters. This is one of the points to consider for making some changes.” – the former Ferrari chairman concluded.
