The FIA General Assembly, held in Cordoba, convened to discuss the future of the sport. Formula 1 owners Liberty Media expressed their desire to modernize the calendar of the premier open-wheel series. One of the proposals made during this meeting was to hold the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia races on Saturday instead of Sunday, taking into account the Muslim festival of Ramadan.
If the proposal were to be accepted, the season would start on March 2nd in Sakhir and then move to Jeddah on March 9th, with both of the first two races on Saturday.
The return of China and the endangered historic circuits
Furthermore, the topic of the Chinese Grand Prix, which could return to the calendar as early as next season, was also addressed. The cars could race along the Shanghai International circuit on April 21st, immediately following the Japanese round, which is expected to be moved to April 7th. This change would also help from a logistical standpoint in terms of travel.
The last point addressed was the historic circuits such as Monaco and Spa. Although Monaco seems to have retained its place on the calendar, at least for now, the situation is different for the Belgian track, which in the coming years could alternate with Zandvoort in the Netherlands.

Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Formula 1, recently made statements about this on the Beyond The Grid podcast: “I laugh when I hear that according to some people Formula 1 doesn’t respect the historic races. It’s absolutely the opposite. What we want is to use this incredible growth moment to ensure that everyone does the right thing. We need to understand that the world is evolving.” – the former Ferrari boss explained.
