The 2025 Formula 1 season will see updates to both the sporting and technical regulations, with the most notable change being the FIA’s intention to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into motorsport to assist stewards in making decisions during sessions.

FIA to Implement AI in Decision-Making
The FIA World Motor Sport Council convened on Wednesday, December 11, for its final meeting of 2024, during which several important decisions were made. One of the key points is the FIA’s plan to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance clarity and improve situations within the sport.

According to the meeting report, the FIA’s technical and safety department is working on integrating AI systems to provide better support for decision-makers. The goals of AI implementation are as follows:

1. Enhance safety standards and implement preventive measures to minimize incidents.
2. Increase efficiency by automating routine tasks, allowing staff to focus on more complex and valuable work.
3. Ensure fairness and consistency in decision-making by offering recommendations based on past data or by automating the detection of violations, such as track limits infringements.

Additional Changes for Formula 1
There are also updates impacting drivers, such as the potential mandatory use of a cooling system in extreme conditions. This system, developed by the FIA in collaboration with F1 teams, aims to improve driver safety. Furthermore, the FIA will adopt more gender-neutral language in its regulations to promote inclusivity.

Financial regulations have also been adjusted to exclude sustainability initiatives from the cost cap, encouraging environmentally friendly innovation in Formula 1. Additionally, the technical regulations for 2026 have been further refined, allowing teams to begin working on aerodynamics starting January 1, 2025.
