The FIA is working on a system that classifies drivers from different disciplines on the basis of merit. In 2023, in short, we will be able to see in the same ranking Lewis Hamilton (if he has not retired), Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, George Russell, Carlos Sainz, but also the various Ogier, Evans, Tänak, Buemi, Kobayashi, da Costa, de Vries, who currently are at the top in other FIA motorsport categories. This was revealed by the director of the department of Formula E and innovative sports activities Frederic Bertrand.
“We would like to launch a system in which all competitors are classified in a global ranking managed by the FIA, so that at the end of each year we have someone who is the number one in the world”, these are the words of Frederic Bertrand, as reported by The-Race – “We are working to create a system that is similar to that of tennis or golf. We may have some additional events at the end of the year where only the highest ranked drivers will be able to participate. Participation in FIA world events helps to determine a ranking that would still be multidisciplinary: it would embrace all FIA motorsport, we want to unite rally and circuit and be sure that everyone can be integrated into the system. This is something we have often discussed with Tom Kristensen (president of the FIA drivers commission, ed): we want to encourage versatility in driving styles, so as not to focus only on one approach” – he explained.
In short, FIA such as ATP, WTA and PGA Tour, which rank players worldwide in tennis and golf. The criteria for this classification remain to be understood: would Formula 1 have the same weight as Formula E? And then, tennis and golf are individual sports, in which the athlete’s merit is closely linked to the result. In motorsport this does not happen automatically, on the contrary it is necessary to separate the driver’s strength from the competitiveness of the car. And it is often a difficult and subjective operation. Not to mention the logistical problems of organizing a Master Tour as happens in tennis: the Formula 1 calendar is already extended. In short, an initiative that will cause plenty of discussion.
