After the splendid victory scored by Scuderia Ferrari and Charles Leclerc in Bahrain and the unexpected double retirement recorded by Red Bull, which now sits 44 points behind in the constructors’ standings, teams and drivers will return to battle at the very fast Jeddah circuit. And the FIA has confirmed the DRS zones for the second round of the 2022 Formula 1 season, as the sport returns to Jeddah with the new generation of cars. 2021 marked the first edition of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and the championship now returns to Jeddah Corniche Circuit this weekend for its second race on the Saudi Arabian track, three months on from its first Grand Prix was held here.
The FIA has confirmed the same three DRS zones and detection points will be used around the 27-turn course as in the 2021 Formula 1 race. The first DRS zone begins at the exit of turn 19, the second is at the entry to turn 25 and the third starts 170 metres after the final corner of the Jeddah Corniche Circuit.
That bend, turn 27, is the only one on the track to have been changed as compared to the previous event. The exit of the turn, where Max Verstappen had an incident at the end of last year’s qualifying session, has been slightly widened. But at the same time the official length of the track remains unchanged at 6.174 kilometres.
The race promoters have made other small alterations to the circuit in order to improve drivers’ sight lines, mainly by reconfiguring barriers.
Last weekend Formula 1 held the first Grand Prix for challengers designed to rules which were intended to make overtaking more easier. For now, drivers gave mixed views on whether DRS had become more or less powerful, and whether it was still required to facilitate overtaking.
