Unlike in previous years, the FIA has not yet released its annual report on the budget cap, raising questions about potential issues for some Formula 1 teams. As the Mexican Grand Prix weekend approaches, the topic has once again become a talking point. Fans and insiders are now wondering whether the delay could signal complications for one or more teams on the grid.
Traditionally, the document containing the FIA’s analysis of each team’s financial accounts is released shortly after the summer break. In 2023, it was published on September 5, while in 2024 it came out on September 11—over a month earlier than this year’s timeline. The only other recent exception was in 2022, when the report was issued on October 10, the same year that Aston Martin and Red Bull were found to have breached the regulations.
Given this delay, some within the paddock fear that the FIA’s silence may indicate potential irregularities for certain teams on the current Formula 1 grid. However, others believe the delay might simply reflect the governing body’s intention to conduct a more thorough review before publishing its final findings.
The FIA comments on the situation
Addressing the speculation, an FIA spokesperson recently provided an update on the matter. The spokesperson explained that the administrative department is finalizing the report concerning the 2024 season and that the results should be available soon. They added that the process requires reviewing and verifying the financial statements of all teams and engine manufacturers before the final report can be released.
The upcoming report, which is expected to be published before the end of the current season, will therefore cover the 2024 financial year. Until then, fans and teams alike will have to wait to see whether all entries have fully complied with Formula 1’s strict cost cap regulations.
