Ferrari insider: Mechanical issue on the SF-26 addressed after Barcelona tests?
Ferrari continues its development work after the Barcelona tests, where the Maranello team encountered a specific mechanical issue on the new SF-26. Has the problem been resolved?
The Barcelona tests were, of course, crucial for all teams, and for Ferrari, this marked the first real track running of a car designed under the new regulations. The initial on-track approach for the Maranello team was very positive. However, after Fiorano, a mechanical issue had emerged on the SF-26. The big question was whether Ferrari managed to fix it during the Barcelona tests.
Testing reliability first
Ferrari arrived in Spain with a single objective: to test the reliability of the new car. The result was excellent, with the SF-26 covering approximately 2,026 kilometers (435 laps) without any major issues. Maranello had thus overcome its first significant hurdle, although the full reliability of the power unit will still need to be verified under maximum stress. Beyond the power unit, other technical choices regarding aerodynamics and mechanics also required attention. In particular, the front suspension had been causing some concerns.
Leclerc and Hamilton raise front suspension concerns at Fiorano
After the initial 15 km shakedown at Fiorano, both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton provided their first feedback on the SF-26. According to the Italian website Autoracer.it, the drivers highlighted specific areas for improvement, especially the front suspension. Technical Director Serra focused heavily on this area, optimizing the upper wishbone angle and the multi-link geometry. Additionally, Ferrari revisited the aggressive anti-dive system introduced by McLaren in 2024. Another critical area was the power steering, which in 2025 had failed to provide accurate feedback to the drivers.
During the Barcelona tests, adjustments were made to the SF-26’s mechanical setup, resolving these initial “teething issues.” Overall, the car’s foundation is considered solid, allowing Ferrari to focus on further enhancing the package for the season ahead.
Next steps for aerodynamics and chassis
In the final days of the first pre-season tests in Bahrain, Ferrari will implement the first aerodynamic refinements on the SF-26, including a new chassis lighter than the one used in Barcelona. This new generation of car is a complete departure from the previous ground-effect design, and the driving characteristics reflect the reduced weight. Maranello insiders say they are “relieved” that no major problems have emerged so far, but they remain cautious. The car is well-received by both drivers, particularly for its front-end focus. Everything will become clearer with the upcoming tests at the Sakhir circuit.
The successful resolution of these early mechanical concerns allows Ferrari to head into the Bahrain tests with a clear focus on pure performance rather than troubleshooting. If the SF-26 continues to respond well to the feedback provided by Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, the Scuderia could find itself in a very strong position as the 2026 F1 season officially kicks off.
