Ferrari has failed to resolve its problems even with the new engineers hired by Frederic Vasseur, and here’s why technical director Loic Serra might not be the right figure for the Maranello team.
The Scuderia’s struggles continue this season, with very few highlights, and with three races remaining, the number of wins secured by Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc remains at zero. Even the fresh faces brought in by Frederic Vasseur have not been enough to help the Prancing Horse. A former team insider explains why technical director Loic Serra might not be the right person for Ferrari.
Throughout last Formula 1 season, there were numerous rumors that the legendary British engineer Adrian Newey, recently departed from Red Bull, would move to Italy. In the end, after joining Lawrence Stroll’s Aston Martin, Ferrari opted for two other major figures from the F1 circus.
The first is Loic Serra, formerly with Mercedes, who took over the technical director role left vacant by Enrico Cardile. The second figure is Jerome d’Ambrosio, former F1 driver, now serving as deputy Team Principal and head of the Ferrari Driver Academy. However, according to a historic Ferrari figure from the Montezemolo-Todt-Schumacher era, engineer Luigi Mazzola, even these new appointments may not be enough to turn the team around.
Mazzola questions Serra’s impact on track
“Serra works on vehicle dynamics, but I never see him on track,” Luigi Mazzola told Fanpage.it. “The track is everything. You look the driver in the eyes and understand how the car is performing, you put your hand on the tires and you already know what they’re telling you. The simulator is useful, but it only simulates numbers that aren’t real. D’Ambrosio? A former driver like Jerome can give a general overview, but he cannot replace someone who leads technical performance.”
“In F1, points are won with the car. You need a very strong technical leadership, with people who bring solutions and new ideas. Everyone talks about Adrian Newey because he has been on track for forty years and knows every detail. That’s the kind of continuity and experience Ferrari really needs.” – the former Ferrari team member concluded.
