Monaco could reveal the true balance of power between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc at Ferrari
Lewis Hamilton delivered his most convincing performance since joining Ferrari at the Canadian Grand Prix, but Formula 1’s next stop may provide a much tougher measure of where he truly stands against teammate Charles Leclerc.
The seven-time world champion arrived in Montreal under increasing pressure to produce a standout result after a mixed start to the 2026 campaign. He responded in impressive fashion, displaying strong pace throughout the weekend and ultimately securing a second-place finish that marked both his best Ferrari result and the Scuderia’s strongest Grand Prix performance of the season so far.
Across the majority of sessions in Canada, Lewis Hamilton held the upper hand over Charles Leclerc. The British driver looked comfortable with the SF-26 from the opening practice sessions and consistently extracted performance from the car when it mattered most.
Although Charles Leclerc managed to finish ahead during the Sprint after Lewis Hamilton suffered damage following an error at the final chicane, the overall picture strongly favoured the former Mercedes driver. By the end of the weekend, the Briton had delivered one of his most complete performances in recent years, further strengthening the belief that he is finally beginning to unlock Ferrari’s full potential.
Perhaps the defining moment came during Sunday’s Grand Prix, when Lewis Hamilton produced a spectacular overtaking move around the outside of Max Verstappen after spending several laps applying pressure to the Red Bull driver. It was the type of move that reminded fans why he remains one of the most successful and respected racers in Formula 1 history.
The result boosted Lewis Hamilton’s championship hopes and provided another important victory in the ongoing intra-team battle with Charles Leclerc. However, the challenge awaiting him in Monaco could be significantly more difficult.
Why Monaco may represent Charles Leclerc’s best opportunity to strike back
While Montreal highlighted many of Lewis Hamilton’s strengths, Monaco has traditionally been one of Charles Leclerc’s most formidable circuits. The unique demands of the famous street track often reward drivers who can extract every last fraction of performance over a single lap, an area where Charles Leclerc has repeatedly excelled throughout his Formula 1 career.
The Monegasque driver’s connection to the event extends far beyond racing statistics. Having grown up in Monaco, Charles Leclerc knows the circuit better than almost anyone on the grid. His familiarity with every corner, bump and braking zone has often translated into exceptional qualifying performances.
Over the years, Charles Leclerc has established himself as one of the fastest drivers around the streets of Monte Carlo, regularly producing laps that have left rivals struggling to match his pace. His memorable victory at the circuit remains one of the defining moments of his Formula 1 career and cemented his reputation as a Monaco specialist.
That is why many analysts view the upcoming race as a crucial benchmark in the Ferrari teammate battle. If Lewis Hamilton can maintain his recent advantage over Charles Leclerc at a venue so closely associated with the Monegasque driver, it would send a powerful message throughout the paddock.
Ferrari tipped as potential Monaco contender
Adding another layer of intrigue is the expectation that Ferrari could be one of the strongest teams during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend.
The characteristics of the SF-26 appear particularly well suited to the slow-speed nature of the circuit. Unlike tracks where engine performance and top speed play a decisive role, Monaco places a greater emphasis on mechanical grip, traction and aerodynamic efficiency through low-speed corners.
These areas have been among Ferrari’s biggest strengths during the 2026 season. The car has consistently demonstrated impressive performance in slower sections of circuits, leading some observers to believe the Scuderia could emerge as a serious contender for pole position and victory.
Qualifying is expected to be especially important. Overtaking opportunities in Monaco remain extremely limited, meaning grid position often determines the outcome of the race. A driver capable of delivering an exceptional lap on Saturday can effectively control the event on Sunday.
That reality naturally favours Charles Leclerc, whose qualifying speed has long been considered one of his greatest assets. However, Lewis Hamilton’s confidence appears to be growing with every race weekend, creating the possibility of one of the most fascinating internal battles Ferrari has experienced in years.
A defining weekend for Ferrari’s driver hierarchy?
The Monaco Grand Prix may also have important implications for the psychological battle unfolding inside Ferrari.
After spending much of 2025 adapting to a completely new environment, Lewis Hamilton now appears increasingly integrated within the team. His recent results have strengthened confidence on both sides of the garage and created fresh momentum heading into one of the season’s most prestigious events.
Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc faces growing scrutiny after being outperformed by Lewis Hamilton in Canada. Although few drivers would be judged harshly for struggling at one event, Monaco represents a venue where expectations surrounding Charles Leclerc are inevitably much higher.
Respected Formula 1 journalist Ralf Bach recently suggested that Monaco could become a pivotal moment in Ferrari’s season. He argued that if Lewis Hamilton were able to defeat Charles Leclerc at a circuit widely regarded as the Monegasque driver’s strongest venue, it would provide a significant indication that the balance of power inside Ferrari may be shifting.
Bach also pointed to Charles Leclerc’s outstanding Monaco record and noted that Ferrari’s current package should be highly competitive around the narrow street circuit. As a result, he believes both Ferrari drivers could emerge as dark horses for victory.
For the seven-time world champion, the challenge is clear. Canada demonstrated that he can still perform at the very highest level. Monaco will reveal whether that resurgence is strong enough to overcome a teammate competing on what many consider his home turf.
If Lewis Hamilton can continue his momentum and outperform Charles Leclerc in Monaco, it would arguably represent his most significant statement since joining Ferrari. If not, the Ferrari teammate battle could swing back in favour of Charles Leclerc just as quickly as it shifted after Montreal.
