Charles Leclerc has made clear that Ferrari’s immediate target is another Grand Prix victory rather than a sustained push for the 2026 Formula 1 drivers’ championship. However, the Monegasque driver has also expressed admiration for Andrea Kimi Antonelli, explaining that he would be pleased to see the Mercedes driver take the title if Ferrari are unable to do so.
The championship picture tightened after Charles Leclerc’s British Grand Prix victory at Silverstone, where Andrea Kimi Antonelli endured a difficult afternoon and finished 15th. With Mercedes’ young Italian driver the only leading contender to miss the podium, the gap at the front of the standings narrowed at a significant stage of the season.
Charles Leclerc focuses on Ferrari’s next race win
Speaking to Sky Sports Italy, Charles Leclerc indicated that it was still too early for him to frame Ferrari’s season around the championship. His priority was to add another victory after his Silverstone success, rather than immediately calculating a route back into the title battle.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli leads the standings on 179 points after nine of 22 rounds, with Mercedes team-mate George Russell second on 154. Lewis Hamilton is third with 147 points, while Charles Leclerc has 108 following his ninth career Formula 1 victory. The result at Silverstone placed Ferrari’s two drivers firmly within reach of the leaders, even if Andrea Kimi Antonelli retains a useful advantage.
Ferrari’s next challenge comes at Spa-Francorchamps, where Charles Leclerc has already outlined the team’s expectations for the weekend in his Belgian Grand Prix preview. The circuit’s demanding mix of high-speed corners, elevation changes and energy management could be especially important under the revised 2026 regulations.
Why Charles Leclerc relates to Andrea Kimi Antonelli
Charles Leclerc explained that he recognised a familiar enthusiasm in Andrea Kimi Antonelli, comparing it with the feeling he had when he entered Formula 1. He added that, should Ferrari fall short in the championship, he would be happy for the Mercedes driver to emerge as champion.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli is only in his second Formula 1 season, but his early form has already made him a serious favourite for the title. The 19-year-old won five consecutive races from rounds two to six, including Monaco, and responded to a battery-related retirement in Barcelona by finishing third in Austria.
His Silverstone race initially appeared capable of delivering another challenge for victory. A failure involving the front-left wheel shield disrupted his afternoon, before a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits added further damage. Charles Leclerc eventually secured the British Grand Prix for Ferrari behind the Safety Car, while George Russell took second place after Lewis Hamilton pitted during the intervention.
The British result also reinforced the unpredictability of the new technical era, particularly as teams continue to address the energy-management compromises highlighted by the FIA’s Spa energy-rule changes. Ferrari will be keen to build on the competitive step shown at Silverstone, while Mercedes seek to ensure Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s difficult race proves an exception rather than a momentum shift.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s record-breaking opportunity
If Andrea Kimi Antonelli can protect his championship lead through the remaining rounds, he could become Formula 1’s youngest-ever world champion. Sebastian Vettel currently holds that record after winning the 2010 title at the age of 23 years and four months.
Charles Leclerc knows how quickly a young driver’s early breakthrough can reshape expectations. After beginning his Formula 1 career with Sauber in 2018, he moved to Ferrari in 2019 and secured his first victories that season at Spa-Francorchamps and Monza. He did not return to the top step until 2022.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli reached five Grand Prix victories in only 33 starts, whereas Charles Leclerc needed 91 races to reach the same total. Charles Leclerc’s Silverstone triumph was his ninth in 180 Formula 1 starts and his first since the 2024 United States Grand Prix, underlining both the significance of Ferrari’s latest win and the scale of Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s rapid rise.
