If there was a moment in which the spark — one that never truly ignited — between Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari appeared in the most heartbreaking way, it was during the final Grand Prix of this season. For the legendary seven-time Formula 1 world champion, this year has been a true via crucis, one that spared him none of its harshest stages. Finding himself suddenly fighting for minor positions — systematically beaten by his teammate Charles Leclerc and left far behind in the World Championship standings, without being able to find a way out together with Ferrari’s engineers, and showing a lack of empathy that went far beyond setups, engine power, and tyres — pushed the British driver into a tunnel that looked increasingly without an exit.
And yet, a champion like Sir Lewis deserved far more than the long and icy silence he received — a silence that would have lasted even longer had he not asked for a reply himself — in return for his beautiful and heartfelt words of gratitude addressed to Ferrari after the end of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The radio exchange between Lewis Hamilton and his engineer Riccardo Adami after the Abu Dhabi GP
At Yas Marina, Lewis Hamilton finished eighth after a strong recovery drive from yet another disastrous qualifying session, where he had started 16th on the grid. It was a race in which he showed, at nearly 41 years old — a milestone he will reach on 7 January — that he has absolutely no intention of giving up, despite those who have already labeled him as old and finished. After the chequered flag, his race engineer Riccardo Adami — with whom tensions and misunderstandings have surfaced multiple times this season — informed him of the result, adding a brief, “It was a good job, a very good recovery.”
Lewis, however, decided to send a message of a completely different tone and emotion to the Scuderia, embracing the entire team in spirit, even though things did not unfold as expected when this highly anticipated partnership began. His team radio was the message of a true team player, full of warmth and appreciation, aimed at planting seeds for the future:
“It’s been a long season, guys. Grazie a tutti (thank you all). For your kindness. I’m grateful for all the hard work. I will always fight for you guys. Always. Grazie.”
Ferrari does not respond to Hamilton: a long silence — “Did you get the message?”
Lewis Hamilton expected an answer — any answer — but instead, what followed was a long, uncomfortable silence. Forty-five seconds of waiting, until the British champion himself felt the need to check, because Lewis deserved anything but being ignored. He asked:
“Did you get the message? It’s the only time you guys don’t reply.”
At that point, Adami finally responded with a nervous laugh:
“Ahah, yes, we got it, we’re talking about it. Thank you very much. It’s been great working with you. And grazie mille.”
The exchange — awkward and painful to hear — quickly went viral on social media. Many pointed out that even in a disastrous season, when a sporting legend speaks to you with such heart and gratitude, the very least Ferrari could offer is a prompt and respectful response.
It was an unfortunate end to a partnership that began with so much hope. Everyone inside and outside Ferrari knows 2026 brings a clean slate – new regulations, new car, new chance to build something special. But if the team wants to get the very best out of Sir Lewis Hamilton, they’ll need more than just a faster car. They’ll need warmth, trust and the kind of instant response you give when someone says thank you from the bottom of their heart.
Because moments like that radio silence? They hurt more than any qualifying lap ever could.
