Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto has confirmed that the Italian side will not accelerate along their pre-established plan of progress just because they have a chance of winning the 2022 Formula 1 world titles.
In the previous two campaigns, the Italian side was aware that it could not get involved in the battle for the world championship and as a result, it decided to reviewed all aspects of their Formula 1 operation and focused its resources on the work needed to get back on top this season. This meant Ferrari had to go through some difficult years, especially in the 2020 F1 championship, languishing in the midfield and even finding themselves at the rear a few times.
The main goal was to get back on top in the 2022 Formula One season and once again be able to challenge Mercedes and Red Bull for race wins as the new era of rules and regulations came in – and the start was very promising, with Charles Leclerc taking two race victories after the first three rounds of the 2022 campaign. Since then, despite the fact that Red Bull have hit back and regained the lead of both World Championships, there is still everything to fight for, with the impressively fast F1-75 car clearly able to sustain a title battle.
However, despite the fight is wide open, Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto admits the Italian side will not divert from their original goals:
“We set our objectives to be back competitive in 2022,” Mattia Binotto told the BBC. “So our objective is to be competitive, not to win the championship, and it would be completely wrong to turn that into ‘let’s try to win the championship because we are so competitive’. Being competitive is one fact. Becoming World Champion is another level of task. [Saying] that is maybe to take off some pressure from the team, but also I think it would be wrong as management to change objectives from the ones we gave them.” – he explained.
Yet this does not mean Scuderia Ferrari will not do everything possible to defeat Red Bull in this season and maybe even start another golden age like they enjoyed with legendary driver Michael Schumacher in the opening years of this century:

“No doubt what we intend to do is to try to open a cycle, become World Champion and not only once, try to stay there. But I think it will take time. Our internal mindset is still we need to improve as a team to be capable of winning a championship. It doesn’t mean we will not do it. Maybe we will do it as soon as possible, but we are conscious of the fact it is more than only being competitive. The ambition is there. Each single person working for Ferrari has the ambition. I don’t think I need to remind them. More important is to let them focus on our process of continuous improvement, so each race is an opportunity for lesson-learned review and to build to do something better. And it is important to stay focused on each single race. We are not looking at the classifications.” – the Ferrari boss concluded.
