The blackout in Singapore appears to have been just that for Red Bull, at least for Max Verstappen’s team. The Dutch driver returns to pole position at the Suzuka circuit, ahead of McLaren and Scuderia Ferrari. Here’s the starting grid for the 2023 Japanese F1 Grand Prix.
In Suzuka, the leader of the world championship is untouchable. The fast and twisty Japanese circuit perfectly suits his car’s characteristics, and the result confirms this. He secures pole position with over half a second ahead of his closest competitors, both clad in “papaya” suits.
Starting alongside the driver from Hasselt will be Oscar Piastri, who places his McLaren ahead of the Englishman Lando Norris’s twin car. Completing the second row is the number 16 Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.
The Monegasque driver of the Prancing Horse was forced to make a single attempt during Q3 due to the “Sargeant” incident in the first round. The same situation applies to his teammate Carlos Sainz, who, having secured the sixth time, will start on the grid just behind the Monegasque, in the third row.
In between the two Ferrari drivers is the other Red Bull, driven by the Mexican Sergio Perez. The former Racing Point driver continues to face challenges: being eight-tenths behind his teammate Verstappen, the driver from Guadalajara will start in fifth place.
