Formula 1 is ready for memorable weekend, both on and off track, with the first edition of the Miami Grand Prix this weekend scheduled to take place at the Miami International Autodrome, with many exciting events awaiting the fans. Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Boinotto says all is well for the sport on the other side of the Atlantic and agrees with F1’s decision to focus on this area.
Riding on a surge of popularity thanks to Netflix introducing the American market, and a broader audience in general, to Formula 1, the sport is arguably at its most widely followed than ever before thanks to social media marketing and the plethora of new media platforms which have been maximised by new owners Liberty Media.
In just a few days, drivers will hit the track, which already looks challenging. One thing is for sure, this track is going to be very fast: after Turn 1, there are a number of long, sweeping corners which eventually loop round on to what is basically a long straight – despite the fact that there are a few kinks at Turn 9 and Turn 10 – which will provide drivers with the chance to attempt overtaking moves into Turn 11. The next section is tighter and twistier (which will mean getting the set-up right will be a difficult task for the teams) before another very long straight and big stop into the Turn 17 hairpin. That’s set to be another overtaking opportunity towards the end of the lap – as Turn 1 is at the start of it – and means this is a street circuit that should be conducive to good racing, as well as being a thrilling prospect over a flat-out qualifying lap.
But the action outside the track will be just as interesting. And now that Formula 1 is heading to Liberty’s home soil, Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto is confident the Miami weekend will be a huge success:
“Generally speaking, I think that the F1 business is going very well. And it’s not only Miami. Miami is one example, but it’s all that’s happening around us in terms of sponsorship interest, in terms of a new track coming onto the calendar. So I think it’s a great moment. I think it’s thanks to the show that Formula 1 is showing. Certainly, during the COVID I think we had at least we have been great, and F1, FIA has been great to organise still calendars with 17 races in 2020. And, last year as well, several races more than 20. So overall, I think it’s very positive. You can see Netflix, the digital communications, the broadcast, it’s all good and positive. And as we’re looking at the race track when you’re coming to see so many people now being there. And it’s fun. And I think the business is going really very well. We can see as a team as well, the interest of sponsors has increased, which is great. And Miami as you said, it’s a fantastic example. In the Americas, things are going very well. And we can only be happy with that.” – Mattia Binotto explained, as the United States represents an essential market especially for Ferrari.

This season, Formula 1 will return to the United States for the Grand Prix weekend at Circuit of the Americas, scheduled to take place on 21-23 October; other F1 events in the Americas include the Canadian Grand Prix (17-19 June), the Mexican Grand Prix (28-30 October and the Brazilian Grand Prix seven days later). But most importantly, next season Las Vegas will also be included on the Formula 1 calendar, which means we will have three races just in the USA.
