Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto already in Austria underlined how the developments introduced on the F1-75 in this 2022 Formula 1 season have always had a positive outcome in terms of increasing the performance of the single-seater built in Maranello. The car entrusted to Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz had a bit of a disadvantage on the straight as compared to the Red Bull RB18 at the start of the championship due to greater drag, but aerodynamic efficiency was significantly improved by the Maranello men.
A first updated version of the rear wing, combined with a refinement of the sidepods and engine cover, has led the F1-75 car to reduce the gap to only a few units of difference in terms of top speed and only in the final part of the straights. And most importantly, With DRS open, the Red Bull RB18 no longer makes the difference as it did at the beginning of the season.
In Maranello, however, they are certainly not satisfied with just almost eliminated this gap, the goal is to completely cancel it and therefore, as underlined by today’s edition of the Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, in the French Grand Prix next weekend, the use of a new rear wing is planned: “The purpose of this development planned for France is to completely cancel it (the gap in terms of top speed on the straight that separated the F1-75 from the RB18), placing the red car in perfect parity with its rival in this respect, while enjoying of a higher (to date) vertical load when cornering ”, writes Paolo Filisetti.
In view of the introduction of the technical antiporpoising directive 039 starting with the Belgian Grand Prix, in France the teams will already begin to evaluate the algorithm with which they will have to be in compliance starting from Spa. As a result, both Scuderia Ferrari and Red Bull are expected to take measures to satisfy the restrictions imposed by the Federation in two respects, the control of the flat floor and the bending of the floor at the rear of the cars. Ferrari prepared for the arrival of the algorithm “by implementing changes to the skates to assess the impact that compliance with the metrics will have on performance” – Gazzetta dello Sport informs.
