We spoke to the Ferrari trainers to delve into the specifics of their preparations for this year’s physically demanding race.
The Singapore Grand Prix is well-known for its humid conditions and the relentless nature of its street circuit, and an avid culture of punters seeking favorable odds. Cardiovascular fitness is paramount for drivers, especially in a race that can extend over two hours. Ferrari trainers incorporate a variety of cardiovascular workouts, including running, cycling, and rowing, to improve the drivers’ endurance.

“Long-distance running sessions are crucial,” explains Laura, another trainer. “We also integrate high-intensity interval training (HIIT) to simulate the bursts of energy required during the race.”
While cardiovascular fitness is vital, strength training plays an equally important role. The forces exerted on a driver’s body during high-speed cornering and braking are immense. Ferrari’s training regimen includes weightlifting and resistance exercises to build core strength, which is essential for maintaining control of the car.
“Core strength is key,” Laura emphasizes. “It stabilizes the body and allows drivers to maintain proper posture while handling the G-forces they experience on the track.”
To complement their strength and endurance training, Ferrari places a strong emphasis on flexibility and recovery. Stretching and yoga sessions are integrated into the training schedule to improve flexibility and reduce the risk of injury.
“Recovery is as important as training,” Marco notes. “We focus on techniques like foam rolling and physiotherapy to help the drivers recover properly between sessions.”
Physical training alone is insufficient for the demands of a Grand Prix. Mental preparation is equally critical. Ferrari’s trainers work closely with sports psychologists to enhance the drivers’ focus and resilience.
“Races like Singapore require not only physical endurance but also mental toughness,” Marco explains. “We use visualization techniques to help drivers prepare for different scenarios they may face on the track.”
In addition, the team conducts simulated race environments, allowing drivers to practice under pressure while familiarizing themselves with the circuit’s intricacies.
Nutrition is another cornerstone of Ferrari’s preparation strategy. The trainers emphasize the importance of a balanced diet that supports intense training regimens and helps drivers maintain their energy levels throughout the race weekend.
“We focus on a diet rich in carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats,” Laura explains. “Hydration is critical, especially in the humid conditions of Singapore, so we also emphasize electrolyte replenishment.”
As race day approaches, drivers fine-tune their diets to ensure optimal performance. This includes carbohydrate loading to maximize glycogen stores and avoiding heavy foods that might cause discomfort during the race.
One of the key aspects of preparing for the Singapore GP is acclimatizing to the hot and humid climate. Ferrari employs specific strategies to help drivers adapt to these conditions well before the race.
“We encourage drivers to arrive in Singapore early to acclimate,” Marco says. “They’ll engage in light training sessions to help their bodies adjust to the heat and humidity.”
Additionally, the team utilizes specialized heat training methods in the weeks leading up to the race. This includes training in hot environments to help improve the drivers’ tolerance to heat stress.
As the race weekend approaches, the focus shifts to fine-tuning everything from car setup to driver strategy. Ferrari’s trainers monitor the drivers closely, ensuring they maintain peak physical condition while managing fatigue.
On the day of the race, pre-race rituals play a significant role in mental preparation. The drivers participate in a series of warm-up exercises and meditation sessions to ensure they are mentally focused and physically ready to tackle the challenge ahead.
