With the introduction of the 2026 Formula 1 regulations, uncertainty naturally looms over all teams, but Ferrari has already received encouraging early signs from their SF-26 during the Barcelona Shakedown. The Italian squad’s first day on track delivered positive feedback, with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc splitting driving duties and laying the foundation for a productive testing programme ahead of the new season.
On Tuesday, Charles Leclerc kicked off the day, completing 64 laps in the morning session at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Lewis Hamilton then took over in the afternoon, logging 57 laps in varying weather conditions. Despite intermittent rain, the Scuderia was able to gather valuable data from a hidden-specification version of the SF-26, providing the engineers with early insights into the car’s performance and reliability.
Ferrari trackside chief hails strong reliability as ‘dream come true’
Ferrari trackside operations manager Matteo Togninalli described the team’s reliability during the shakedown as a “dream come true.” Speaking to the media, including Motorsport.com, Togninalli explained that although the morning offered only about 90 minutes of dry running and much of the day required wet-weather tyres, the team managed to complete 121 laps collectively between the Briton and the Monegasque. He highlighted that achieving nearly two Grand Prix distances on the very first day, without encountering significant mechanical issues, exceeded expectations and marked a major milestone for the 2026 SF-26 programme.
During his comments, Togninalli reflected on Ferrari’s previous experiences with major regulation changes, recalling the 2014 pre-season testing campaign. That year, the introduction of a new engine formula led to a PR setback when Ferrari-powered cars managed only 38 laps on the first day. Compared with that challenging start, the 2026 shakedown represented a significant improvement, demonstrating the effectiveness of the team’s winter development efforts and reliability-focused strategies.
Importance of dry laps and ongoing development
Although the weather limited optimal conditions on Tuesday, Matteo Togninalli stressed the importance of collecting more dry-lap data in the remaining days of testing. Understanding the behaviour of the SF-26 under ideal conditions is essential for fine-tuning the car’s setup and preparing for performance comparisons against rival teams. He emphasized that while it is still too early to draw conclusions about outright pace, accumulating mileage is crucial to evaluate technical elements, optimise aerodynamics, and refine the new power unit.
Looking ahead, Matteo Togninalli underlined that the remaining Barcelona sessions, as well as upcoming pre-season tests, will provide Ferrari with the first real opportunities to benchmark against competitors. Both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc will play a key role in this process, providing detailed feedback to engineers to help unlock the potential of the SF-26. The team remains optimistic that their structured programme and careful approach to reliability will allow them to enter the 2026 season with a strong foundation.
Overall, the early impressions from Barcelona suggest that Ferrari’s meticulous preparation over the winter break, combined with careful trackside operations, has set the SF-26 up for a promising start. The focus now shifts to maximizing dry-lap running and continuing to collect data that will guide the development path for Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, and the entire Scuderia heading into the new Formula 1 season.
