Scuderia Ferrari will use the winter break to evaluate the future of Carlos Sainz, the Italian side’s Team Principal Mattia Binotto has confirmed.
Las weekend in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, all the attention was on the Max Verstappen versus Lewis Hamilton title duel, but the Spanish driver also pun in a great performance to finish third and therefore score another podium for the Maranello team.
“A podium to end a magic season – first season for me at Ferrari. P5 in the championship I think.” – Carlos said, at the end of the Yas Marina race.
The 27-year-old struggled at times to keep up with Ferrari number 1 Charles Leclerc in 2021, but most – including the Maranello team – agree that Carlos Sainz did well: “Carlos had a great year” – boss Mattia Binotto confirmed.
The team principal was asked if Scuderia Ferrari will offer Carlos Sainz a contract extension after his strong first year in Maranello, as his current deal is avalable until the end of next season:
“When we signed him a year ago, we said that the winter would be the time to talk and review everything that happened during the season” – Mattia Binotto added – “So we will do that in the winter. There will be a joint review of the entire season and we will talk about what our future will look like.”
At the same time, the Ferrari boss confirmed that the Spanish driver delivered on what the Maranello team expected of him in 2021: “When we signed Carlos, we wanted two good drivers in the race who are consistently scoring points. That’s been the case this season. I’m very happy with what Carlos has done this season, his first with Ferrari, which was not easy. But we signed him because he is a good driver who scores points and is able to learn.” – Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto concluded.
