The boat is being built in Italy
Ferrari today unveiled the new Hypersail project, a bold and unprecedented sporting challenge in the world of sailing that merges racing tradition with cutting-edge technology. The name Hypersail pays tribute to Ferrari’s racing heritage and its Hypercars, which represent the pinnacle of endurance performance.
Led by Team Principal Giovanni Soldini, Hypersail aims to establish a world-class research and development platform dedicated to ocean navigation. With a mission to push the boundaries of technology and innovation, the project leverages the expertise of the Ferrari team, working closely with top nautical specialists throughout the entire cycle of design, engineering, and testing.
The boat, designed by French naval architect Guillaume Verdier, is also a major nautical undertaking: an original 100-foot flying ocean monohull prototype, which will stabilize its flight on three support points. Verdier’s radical innovation includes one of the foils being supported by a canting keel, while the remaining points of contact will be a foil on the rudder and alternating side foils. The 100-foot vessel is also the world’s first of its size to be entirely energy self-sufficient. Currently under construction in Italy, the boat is expected to be launched in 2026, beginning its testing phase with initial trials at sea.
John Elkann stated that Hypersail is a new challenge pushing Ferrari beyond its traditional boundaries and expanding its technological horizons. At the same time, it fits perfectly within Ferrari’s legacy, drawing inspiration from their Hypercar, which has triumphed three times at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He emphasized that designing a boat for offshore sailing is perhaps the ultimate form of endurance, and noted Giovanni Soldini’s key role in the project, both as an accomplished sailor and for his unrivaled experience in boat development. The Ferrari chairman added that the close collaboration between Ferrari and Guillaume Verdier is bringing to life a unique vessel that will soar across the oceans and serve as an innovation platform for both the marine and automotive sectors.
Giovanni Soldini expressed his excitement and honor at being part of the venture. He described it as an exciting challenge supported by a truly unique team that blends Ferrari’s excellence with the know-how of designers specialized in ocean sailing. He highlighted how the convergence of different cultures and advanced technologies is enabling the creation of a revolutionary boat. From a nautical standpoint, it is innovative in both its construction and the way it flies. On the systems side, Ferrari’s contribution is driving the development of an onboard control system never seen before. To best prepare for the variable and intense conditions faced at sea, the top priority is finding the balance between the pursuit of extreme performance and maximum reliability.
