Ferrari endured a frustrating qualifying session for the 6 Hours of Barcelona, with mistakes preventing the 499P from challenging for pole position as Genesis celebrated a historic first World Endurance Championship pole. Antonio Fuoco could manage only eighth place in Hyperpole, while Antonio Giovinazzi was eliminated earlier, leaving the Italian manufacturer facing a difficult task in the race at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Mathys Jaubert delivered the breakthrough result for Genesis at Montmeló, setting an impressive pace to beat former Porsche LMDh driver Mathieu Jaminet, his teammate in the Korean manufacturer’s programme. Toyota’s Ryō Hirakawa split the two Genesis cars by securing second place in the #8 Toyota, confirming that the Japanese manufacturer remains firmly in contention. Ferrari, meanwhile, failed to execute qualifying effectively, losing valuable opportunities with both Giovinazzi and Fuoco at a circuit where starting towards the front could prove particularly important.
Ferrari Barcelona Hypercar qualifying: Giovinazzi eliminated before Hyperpole
The first qualifying session produced several unexpected results, beginning with the elimination of both Aston Martin Valkyries. The British cars had shown encouraging single-lap performance during free practice, making their failure to progress a surprise given their characteristics.
Ferrari also struggled to extract the maximum performance from its machinery. Antonio Giovinazzi was unable to produce a sufficiently competitive lap in the #51 Ferrari 499P, finishing approximately four tenths slower than Antonio Fuoco, who ended the opening session in sixth position.
Giovinazzi’s qualifying effort was compromised when he became stuck behind one of the Aston Martin Valkyries during his first attempt. The traffic prevented him from exploiting the maximum grip available from his tyres at the most favourable moment of their performance window.
The two BMW M Hybrid V8 entries were also eliminated before Hyperpole, struggling with the limited grip available on the Barcelona circuit. Sheldon van der Linde was particularly surprised to find himself approximately one second away from the leading pace, even though outright qualifying performance has never been the strongest characteristic of BMW’s prototype.
Both Peugeot entries also finished towards the bottom of the classification, completing a difficult qualifying session for several established Hypercar manufacturers.
Genesis claims historic Barcelona Hyperpole as Ferrari misses another opportunity
The decisive Hyperpole session belonged to Genesis, with Mathys Jaubert producing an exceptional performance to secure the manufacturer’s first pole position in the World Endurance Championship. The French driver stopped the clock at 1:30.166, delivering a landmark achievement for the Korean project during its debut season.
Questions remain over the relative Balance of Performance values, but Genesis has once again demonstrated the strength of its new Hypercar programme. The result reinforced the impression of an extremely solid project, with both cars proving competitive against more established manufacturers.
Ryō Hirakawa placed the #8 Toyota between the Genesis entries, while Mathieu Jaminet completed the top three. The former Porsche 963 driver ensured that both Oreca-based Genesis LMDh cars occupied leading positions ahead of a race expected to take place in wet conditions.
For Ferrari, however, Hyperpole brought another missed opportunity. Antonio Fuoco lost his first attempt on fresh tyres because of a track-limits infringement, preventing him from capitalising on the compound’s peak performance window.
Although the Italian driver subsequently improved, he could climb only to eighth position. The result underlined another disappointing execution of qualifying for the Maranello manufacturer, which had already seen Antonio Giovinazzi lose his chance to progress in the earlier session.
The performance of the Ferrari 499P therefore remains difficult to judge purely from the final qualifying positions, with both drivers encountering circumstances that prevented them from completing their ideal laps. Nevertheless, the result leaves Ferrari behind Genesis and Toyota on the starting grid.
Rain could change Ferrari’s prospects in the 6 Hours of Barcelona
Attention now turns to the six-hour race, with rain considered highly likely to influence proceedings at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The prospect of a wet track could significantly alter the competitive order established during qualifying.
Genesis and Toyota have emerged as the reference points in terms of race pace, reinforcing the strong performances already demonstrated over a single lap. However, the arrival of rain could change the balance between the leading manufacturers and create opportunities for competitors who struggled in dry conditions.
Wet weather could be particularly helpful to teams that have experienced difficulties managing tyre degradation. Different track conditions would change the demands placed on the tyres, potentially reducing the importance of the dry-weather performance patterns seen so far.
For Ferrari, the possibility of rain offers an opportunity to recover from a disappointing qualifying session. The 499P drivers will need to make progress through the field, but the uncertainty surrounding the weather means the competitive picture could look very different once the race begins.
The challenge will be converting that opportunity into a stronger result after a qualifying session in which execution proved costly. With Genesis and Toyota setting the benchmark, Ferrari enters the 6 Hours of Barcelona needing a more effective performance to fight its way towards the front.
