For Ferrari and its fans, it increasingly feels like being stuck in an endless loop. The SF-25 usually arrives at a race weekend with enthusiasm on Friday, showing promising signs during free practice. Yet, by Saturday, something unexpected happens in qualifying, and once the race begins, technical issues or reliability problems suddenly appear. This pattern was seen in Budapest earlier in the season, and once again it happened in Azerbaijan. In Baku, Charles Leclerc encountered a power unit problem that has now pushed Ferrari to dig deeper into the matter.
During a Grand Prix once again dominated and won by Max Verstappen, the difficulties experienced by the Monegasque driver in the opening stint worried the Tifosi considerably. Despite having cars ahead of him that should have been easier to overtake on paper, Charles Leclerc seemed unable to make progress, as though stuck in traffic on a busy Friday night in Milan.
A new investigation is underway
Both Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur and Charles Leclerc himself provided some explanations after the race. In their post-race interviews, they revealed that a technical fault with the SF-25’s power unit had compromised performance in the crucial early laps. Fred Vasseur admitted that the team encountered a battery charging issue with Charles Leclerc’s car, which significantly reduced the ability to overtake on the straights. He stressed that Ferrari will have to carry out a detailed investigation to fully understand the reasons behind this fault, which mysteriously disappeared by the end of the race.
This situation is reminiscent of what happened in Budapest, where car number 16 immediately lost performance after a pit stop. On that occasion, the Maranello team also decided to conduct an internal investigation, focusing on potential issues related to the chassis. Now, with yet another unexplained setback in Azerbaijan, Ferrari finds itself once more in the position of having to “understand” what is happening with the SF-25, as reliability concerns continue to frustrate the Scuderia’s ambitions.
