Lotus remains the sole team to achieve three consecutive wins at Zandvoort, courtesy of Clark’s winning streak from 1963 to 1965. Ferrari, Matra, and McLaren are the other teams to have secured back-to-back wins at the circuit.
Throughout the history of the Dutch Grand Prix, there have been 11 instances of a team achieving a 1-2 finish. McLaren most recently accomplished this feat with their cars claiming first and second place in both 1984 and 1985.
Zandvoort Circuit Overview
The track, spanning 4.259 kilometers, poses a unique challenge due to its proximity to the beach, which often results in sand being blown across the surface by the wind. With significant climbs and drops, as well as beloved sections, the circuit offers an exhilarating experience for both drivers and spectators.
Renowned Turns
Notably, the circuit features Tarzan corner, locally known as Tarzanbocht, a sharp right hairpin situated at the end of the start-finish straight, slightly banked for added excitement. One memorable moment at this corner was Gilles Villeneuve’s remarkable overtaking maneuver around the outside of Alan Jones during the 1979 race. Other iconic turns include the Rob Slotemakerbocht and the fast, blind right-hander known as Scheivlak.

Enhanced Banking
To enhance the spectacle for its return, the Dutch circuit has undergone modifications, particularly at turn 3 and the final turn, turn 14, which now boast a 19-degree banking. This adjustment allows drivers to tackle these corners at much higher speeds. Given the track’s narrowness and twisty nature, overtaking is challenging, necessitating a medium to high downforce setup. Qualifying will hold great significance in determining success. Shell has developed a special high-grip surface for Zandvoort’s return, earning it the nickname “Flying Dutchman,” in honor of exceptional local drivers. Two DRS (Drag Reduction System) zones are available, one between turns 10 and 11, and another on the main straight.
Scuderia Ferrari holds the record for the most appearances on the podium at this venue, with their drivers securing a top-three finish on 25 occasions.
The lowest starting position from which a podium finish has been achieved at Zandvoort is 16th on the grid, a feat accomplished by Jean-Pierre Beltoise in the 1968 Dutch Grand Prix. Interestingly, between 1979 and 1985, at least one podium finisher emerged from outside the top nine starting positions in every race held at the circuit.
Notably, the 1968 Dutch Grand Prix stands as the only race at this track where none of the top three qualifiers managed to secure a podium finish.
Throughout the history of the circuit, there have been four races in which the top three qualifiers crossed the finish line in the exact order they started, resulting in all of them standing on the podium. This occurred in the years 1970, 1974, 1978, and most recently in 2021.
