
Ferrari’s SF-26 development plan for the second half of the 2026 Formula 1 season will focus on extracting the car’s full potential more consistently. The summer break represents a crucial opportunity for Maranello to determine the right direction, because the team’s problem does not appear to be limited to outright speed.
The SF-26 has shown considerable potential on several occasions, but Ferrari have not always been able to exploit it across every circuit and condition. The central challenge is therefore to turn a car that remains difficult to interpret into a more effective, predictable and consistently competitive package.
The Ferrari SF-26 has already shown competitive potential
The SF-26 has already demonstrated that it can be competitive. The difficulty is that Ferrari’s strongest performances have not always been accompanied by the same ability to maximise the car under every set of circumstances.
Barcelona, Silverstone and Hungary all provided important indications in this respect. Ferrari can produce an impressive level of performance, but the team still faces the challenge of finding the right compromise to place the car in its ideal operating condition.
That must be the starting point for the second half of the season. Ferrari may not need to revolutionise the project; instead, the priority is to develop a deeper understanding of how the SF-26 behaves and how its existing potential can be accessed more reliably.
Is setup the Ferrari SF-26’s real problem?
One of the most significant questions concerns the SF-26’s setup. When a Formula 1 car appears to possess substantial potential but cannot consistently translate it into performance, the team must establish how much of the problem comes from the underlying design and how much depends on configuring the car correctly.
This distinction is particularly important for Ferrari. The SF-26 must be placed within its ideal operating window, which requires several interconnected elements to work properly at the same time. These include aerodynamics, overall car balance, hybrid behaviour, energy management and deployment.
There is therefore no single isolated problem for Ferrari to solve. Performance depends on the interaction between several areas, and weakness in one of them can prevent the entire package from working as intended.
Aerodynamic efficiency and balance are central to Ferrari’s plan
Improving the SF-26’s aerodynamic efficiency will be one of Ferrari’s main objectives during the second half of 2026. Simply generating more downforce, however, will not be enough. Ferrari must find performance without compromising the car’s overall balance.
This is where setup becomes particularly important. A car with strong aerodynamic potential must be able to translate that advantage into effective dynamic behaviour on the circuit. When the balance is not correct, some of the performance available within the package remains inaccessible.
Ferrari’s engineers must consequently focus on identifying the SF-26’s most effective operating window. That same search for efficiency and balance also provides important context for the team’s decision to fast-track a new SF-26 floor for Zandvoort after evaluating data collected at Silverstone.
Ferrari may not need to revolutionise the SF-26
The second half of the season does not necessarily require Ferrari to transform the SF-26 into a completely different car. If the project already possesses the necessary potential, understanding it more thoroughly and developing it in the correct direction could be more valuable than pursuing a radical overhaul.
This means improving aerodynamic efficiency, refining the balance and optimising the car’s overall management while gradually eliminating the compromises that prevent it from being competitive every weekend.
Ferrari must find additional performance without sacrificing the characteristics that already work. It is a delicate balance, particularly while the team are attempting to recover ground against their main rivals.
Hybrid performance and energy deployment also matter
The SF-26 cannot be assessed solely from an aerodynamic perspective. Under the 2026 Formula 1 regulations, the hybrid system and the management of electrical energy play a fundamental role in the car’s overall performance.
The Italian side must therefore consider the relationship between the SF-26’s behaviour and the way energy is managed throughout a lap. Deployment is not a separate component that can be optimised in isolation. It must be integrated with the rest of the package, because strong aerodynamic performance needs to be supported by effective energy use.
The objective is to create a complete system in which aerodynamics, balance and the power unit can operate together. Ferrari’s work in this area will become particularly significant as the team prepares its major power-unit upgrade for Monza.
The post-summer phase will be an important test
The most revealing question after the summer break will be how quickly Ferrari can transform its improved understanding of the SF-26 into genuine performance on the circuit. The car’s underlying potential does not appear to be the principal concern; the challenge is exploiting it more consistently.
The races completed so far have shown that the SF-26 can approach the performance of the leading cars when Ferrari find the right conditions. Taking the next step will require the car to become less dependent on those specific circumstances and easier to place within its optimal operating window.

Ferrari needs a precise SF-26 development direction
The second half of the season should therefore be treated as a highly targeted phase of SF-26 development. Ferrari’s task is not simply to introduce new components at the circuit. Every update must be accompanied by a clear understanding of why it works, where it produces performance and how it changes the car’s overall behaviour.
This is the crucial step. If the Maranello team can improve the correlation between its predictions and the performance observed on the circuit, the team will also be able to accelerate subsequent development.
Conversely, continuing to introduce solutions without fully understanding the car’s behaviour could slow the process even further. Precision will be essential throughout every stage of Ferrari’s wider SF-26 technical development.
The true objective for Ferrari
Ferrari’s challenge during the second half of the season will not simply be to recover a few tenths of a second. Above all, the team must finally understand the SF-26 in its entirety.
Ferrari need to bring together every important element: more efficient aerodynamics, a more effective balance, improved energy management and deployment that complements the behaviour of the car. If all those areas can work together, the SF-26’s potential could be exploited much more effectively.
That is the plan Ferrari must pursue after the summer break. The SF-26 does not necessarily need to become a different car. It needs to be understood, optimised and developed in the correct direction.
