The rivals are progressing, but Ferrari is not. That seems to be the best way to summarize what has been seen in recent weeks, as Mercedes and Red Bull appear to have made significant steps forward in performance, closing in on McLaren, which has remained consistent at its usual level. Ferrari, on the other hand, seems to have lost direction and become increasingly unable to react to the recurring problems that have affected the SF-25 since the start of the season. Despite the few updates introduced, the car has never managed to bring a real turning point to its campaign. As a result, the Maranello-based team now appears to be the fourth force on the grid. This trend could very likely condemn the Scuderia to finishing the season in third place in the Constructors’ Championship, unless there is a sharp turnaround in the final six races—a challenge that both drivers seem to approach differently, judging from their recent comments.
Two different perspectives from Hamilton and Leclerc
During Thursday’s press conference in Austin, Lewis Hamilton described the upcoming races as preparation for 2026, admitting that his focus is now on the long term. “I’m thinking about the next six races as learning and process-improvement tests,” Lewis Hamilton said. “In recent events, we’ve missed a few opportunities, and we’ll keep working on that. The goal is to take the positives and change what doesn’t work. It’s about building relationships and communication. Everyone in the factory deserves a good result. The objective is to maximize what’s possible and stay focused.”
Charles Leclerc, however, was more direct and less philosophical in his outlook. “As Ferrari, we are aware that it’s not possible—and not acceptable—to go a full year without winning,” he stated. “We are doing everything we can. The truth is that since the start of the season, we haven’t been at McLaren’s level, and now not even Mercedes or Red Bull’s. No one is satisfied. I’ve heard people say there’s no reaction from the team, but when I see what’s happening inside, I can assure you there are strong reactions and a real desire to return to winning ways.”
Gearbox problems hit Charles Leclerc during FP1
However, that turnaround does not seem to have arrived yet. During the first free practice session at the United States Grand Prix, the Ferrari SF-25 failed to impress in terms of outright pace and was hit by several issues—Lewis Hamilton experienced problems with the accelerator pedal, while Charles Leclerc was forced to end his session early due to gearbox trouble on his car, reporting the problem immediately over team radio.
Leclerc: “What happened? Can I shift or not? Seventh gear won’t engage. I’ve got a problem.”
Bozzi: “Box, Charles.”
Leclerc: “There’s a smell of oil.”
The issue marked another frustrating moment for Charles Leclerc and Ferrari, as the team continues to face technical challenges in a season where reliability and consistency remain their main weaknesses.
