Scuderia Ferrari is turning the page today in Maranello, with new team boss Frederic Vasseur ready to start work and preparations for the 2023 Formula 1 season. However, not from a technical point of view, no major changes are expected.
Meanwhile, if Mercedes has already fired up its 2023 car (W14), Maranello is working hard to get to that first important moment of a new season. A fire-up that will be carried out with a revised and modified power unit compared to the one frozen last season. As pointed out by F1 experts Giuliano Duchessa and Piergiuseppe Donadoni for formu1a.uno, reliability updates and changes are permitted, provided they are minor and motivated by safety reasons, also in terms of design. The list with the changes must be sent to the FIA which can take up to 14 days for evaluations and homologation.
The new Ferrari power unit will be able to count on new parts, in order to also improve the management of turbo boost during oscillations (mainly due to porpoising) at high speeds. Bouncing is a phenomenon which, at least according to what some aerodynamicists say, not only in Maranello, will be fairly under control with next season’s Formula 1 cars.
However, it may not be 100% resolved even with the introduction of regulation changes such as the ride height of the floor back edges and the throat of the diffuser. Something that had greatly contributed to the technical failures and couldn’t be fully fixed during the 2022 Formula One season. The same issues were also suffered by Mercedes, especially at the beginning of last season. In this regard, a small temporary experiment was introduced in the final race of the 2022 championship only on the Alfa Romeo of Valtteri Bottas, which did not work completely but contributed to certain evaluations of the work to be carried out at the bench.

According to formu1a.uno, the 2023 Ferrari power unit is completing work on the bench with repeated long run sessions at maximum power, unlike last winter. There is cautious optimism of being able to carry out the entire 2023 Formula 1 season with no more than 4 high-performance power units.
