Ferrari wrapped up the Barcelona tests with the fastest lap set by Lewis Hamilton, offering some of the first early signals ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The Barcelona tests came to an end last Friday, with teams having the opportunity to use three out of the five available days to run on the Catalan circuit.
The first test session, which took place behind closed doors, provided the initial indications of the competitive order for the 2026 campaign. Teams completed a significant number of kilometres on track, although none of them have yet reached their true limits. In Barcelona, drivers focused mainly on getting to grips with the new cars and the updated systems introduced under the next-generation regulations.
Despite the private nature of the tests, the first rumours have begun to emerge from the Formula 1 paddock, particularly regarding Ferrari’s performance with a view to the 2026 season.
The outcome of the tests
Ferrari concluded the first test session of the 2026 Formula 1 season with the fastest overall time, set by Lewis Hamilton. According to reports from The Race, it was not so much the outright lap time that impressed rival teams, but rather the reliability shown by the Maranello squad’s power unit.
After Mercedes, Ferrari was the team that completed the highest number of laps over the course of the Barcelona test. Once again according to the same source, several rumours circulating in the paddock currently see the Prancing Horse as Mercedes’ closest challenger. What was observed in Barcelona would place Ferrari ahead of the reigning world champions McLaren, as well as Red Bull, at least at this early stage of preparation.
In just a few days’ time, the teams will return to the track for further days of testing, this time at the Bahrain circuit, and these sessions will be open to the public. The dates to mark on the calendar are February 11, 12 and 13, followed by February 18, 19 and 20.
During these additional test days, the teams will be able to collect more data to help refine their cars ahead of the first Grand Prix of the season, which will take place in Australia on Sunday, March 8.
The early indicators from the 2026 pre-season shakedown suggest that Ferrari has successfully navigated the initial technical hurdles of the new regulations, positioning themselves as a formidable force from day one. By combining Lewis Hamilton’s chart-topping pace with engine reliability that rivaled the “bulletproof” Mercedes, the Scuderia has effectively silenced early skeptics and forced the rest of the grid to take notice. While the true hierarchy will only be confirmed under the conditions of the Bahrain tests and the season opener in Melbourne, the current momentum within Maranello indicates that the SF-26 is a project built on a very solid foundation.
Ferrari’s impressive showing in Barcelona, characterized by Lewis Hamilton’s speed and robust engine reliability, has therefore established the team as a leading contender for the 2026 season as the paddock prepares for the final showdown in Bahrain.
