Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto was left to wonder what might have been for the Maranello team at circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, as the Italian side did not have the opportunity to recover after the disappointing qualifying session for the Belgian Grand Prix due to the difficult weather conditions on Sunday afternoon.
Scuderia Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz qualified outside the top ten on Saturday, but as a result of several penalties received by other drivers and a mistaje by Sergio Perez ahead of the race on Sunday meant that Charles and Carlos gained a few positions while running behind the Safety Car for two laps before the race was called off due to the poor visibility.
Wet track conditions often means uncertainty and surprising results in Formula 1, as could be seen ahead of the summer break when Esteban Ocon’s was able to capitalized on the events which took place at the start of the Hungarian Grand Prix to score his first Formula One win, and the Ferrari boss feels it was a shame the Maranello team did not get the opportunity to fight its way back through the field at Spa-Francorchamps:
“Our weekend had not gone particularly well, but it’s a shame that we never got to see how things might have gone in a race where anything could have happened,” Mattia Binotto explained on Sunday evening – “Now we must concentrate on the next race in Zandvoort, a historic circuit which makes its return to the championship calendar after a very long absence.”
While the Ferrari Team Principal is now focused on the next round of the season which takes places in just a few days time, Mattia Binotto also wanted to thank the fans for who stuck it out in Belgium despite the adverse conditions: “I’d like to thank all the spectators who stayed to the very end at the track, hoping to see what should have been an uncertain and spectacular race. The Race Director did everything he could to try and get the Grand Prix underway, but conditions were never good enough to do so without jeopardising the safety of the drivers and those working trackside. The final result was thus determined from the starting grid positions, which means we come away with two points finishes.” – Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto concluded.
