In a recent interview for the Italian media, Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto discussed the Maranello team’s current line-up and also the situation of its junior drivers ahead of the 2022 Formula 1 season:
How do you judge the drivers?
Mattia Binotto: “I’m convinced that with Charles and Carlos we have the best pair in Formula 1. We know Charles, he grew up in our academy and we have no doubts about his ability. Carlos didn’t surprise me. Before choosing him, we analysed his characteristics: he’s concrete, he brings points to the team and he’s clear in his communication with the engineers. He is integrating and understanding the car better and better. In the second half of the season, I expect Carlos to put a perfect weekend together, with no mistakes in qualifying, at the start or in the race. The way Carlos and Charles are working together, gives me hope for the future. Without the qualifying incidents in Monte Carlo and at the start in Hungary, where Charles was also unlucky, he would have one more win and a second place. He is growing in his race vision [race craft] and tyre management. He has great potential. This year has been more difficult for the Ferrari Driver Academy, but you have to give the guys time to grow. Mick Schumacher’s first Fomrmula 1 season serves as a learning curve, with no pressure, and we are discussing with Haas to confirm him there. Antonio Giovinazzi remains our reserve driver, the first alternative to our main drivers. He is showing growth every year and I hope he can stay at Alfa Romeo, he deserves it.” – the Ferrari boss explained.
