Scuderia Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has publicly defended Lewis Hamilton following the seven-time world champion’s controversial remarks at the Hungarian Grand Prix, insisting that Hamilton remains fully motivated despite expressing frustration. Vasseur emphasised that the Mercedes legend’s comments were driven by disappointment rather than a loss of focus or ambition.
The situation unfolded after Hamilton qualified in 12th place at the Hungaroring, while his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc secured pole position. Following the session, Lewis Hamilton described his performance as “useless” and suggested that the team might need to consider evaluating other driver options, reflecting his high standards and competitive nature. Despite these remarks, Fred Vasseur was quick to highlight that Lewis Hamilton’s commitment to the Scuderia remains unwavering.
Lewis Hamilton’s transition to Ferrari has been challenging, with the seven-time world champion yet to claim a full grand prix podium with the Italian team. He has, however, achieved success in other formats, including a victory in the Chinese Sprint race and a third-place finish in the shorter Miami event. These results demonstrate that while the adjustment to a new team and car has been complex, Hamilton continues to deliver strong performances under varying conditions.
Currently under a two-year contract with an option for a third season at Maranello, Lewis Hamilton has confirmed his participation in the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix following the summer break. Vasseur took the opportunity to reassure media outlets and fans that the Briton’s dedication has not wavered, and that the driver’s candid comments should be understood in context.
Fred Vasseur explained to journalists that the seven-time Formula 1 world champion’s frustration was natural given the circumstances, but that it did not indicate a lack of motivation. He suggested that emotional reactions are common in competitive sports, comparing the situation to the kind of unfiltered comments often heard from athletes in football when microphones capture their immediate reactions. The Ferrari team principal highlighted that it is normal for drivers to express raw disappointment immediately after a session or race, especially when expectations are high.
He continued by noting that while every member of the team shares a desire for consistent top results, the realities of a highly competitive season mean that performance fluctuations are inevitable. Fred Vasseur acknowledged that the ideal scenario would be to consistently achieve pole positions and race wins, but explained that the nature of Formula 1 competition is such that even a slight deviation in performance can result in a lower qualifying position, emphasizing that Hamilton’s current situation reflects the tightly contested field rather than a lack of effort or enthusiasm.
Ultimately, the French manager reinforced that Lewis Hamilton’s commitment to Ferrari remains strong, and that the team continues to push in the right direction with both drivers. He stressed that the focus remains on continuous improvement and strategic development, underlining that temporary setbacks and public expressions of frustration are part of the competitive process in Formula 1. By maintaining open communication and supporting their lead driver, Ferrari aims to channel Hamilton’s determination positively as the season progresses.
