More and more teams have been complaining about the tyres for the 2019 Formula One season: following some blistering issues in 2018, Pirelli has made a change to the tyres this season, which seems to favour Mercedes.
Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto thinks that Pirelli should reconsider their tyre policy and demands a return to tyres with thicker treads: “The tyres don’t overheat any more and therefore there is almost no tyre wear. All GPs are one-stop races. That’s bad for the show.”
Italian motorsport engineer and manager Guenther Steiner, currently the team principal of the Haas Formula One Team, said how 2019 is only a championship of trying to find the right tyre window and most recently Red Bull’s Helmut Marko hit out at Pirelli saying that it was “stupid to change the tyres at Mercedes request”.
“Mercedes has a huge advantage at the moment thanks to this stupid change on the tyres. There are nine teams that struggle and only one that benefits. The request to reduce the tread came from Mercedes who always suffered from blistering. But that’s the way to ruin the sport.” – Red Bull’s Helmut Marko admitted, ahead of the 2019 Canadian Grand Prix.
