Ferrari has launched a technical recruitment drive to strengthen its engineering structure, with two specialists already arriving from Mercedes and Aston Martin and several more additions expected during the second half of the 2026 Formula 1 season. Fred Vasseur is targeting areas in which the Maranello technical department still lacks expertise as the team attempts to become a more consistent winning force.
The recruitment campaign began before Ferrari’s racing division entered its two-week summer shutdown. Some of the incoming engineers are unlikely to be familiar names to most Formula 1 fans, while others could be more prominent figures within the paddock and among technical insiders.
These appointments have become necessary after the first part of the season exposed a Ferrari team that is not yet mature enough to win consistently. Although the SF-26 has demonstrated competitive potential and Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have both returned the Scuderia to victory, too many mistakes, missed opportunities and execution problems have prevented Ferrari from maximising its performance.
Ferrari technical recruitment drive forms part of regular turnover
After thanking Ferrari’s racing division staff for their commitment during the opening phase of the championship, Fred Vasseur moved to reinforce the organisation as part of the regular personnel turnover that characterises Formula 1 teams.
The recruitment decisions were made well in advance and were not a direct reaction to Ferrari’s disappointing Hungarian Grand Prix. Formula 1 engineers are generally restricted by periods of gardening leave before they can begin working for a rival, making contractual notice periods one of the main obstacles to personnel movement within the championship.
Nevertheless, the timing follows another weekend in which Ferrari failed to convert the SF-26’s potential into the strongest possible result. Charles Leclerc finished fourth and Lewis Hamilton fifth in the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix classification, reinforcing the importance of improving both technical depth and operational consistency.
Mercedes and Aston Martin engineers join Ferrari
Ferrari has so far welcomed two relatively low-profile engineers from Mercedes and Aston Martin. Luciano Nicomede has moved from Mercedes’ Brackley operation to Maranello as a Senior Chassis Composite Designer, the same position he held for more than four years with the German manufacturer.
Carlos Sánchez Martínez has also joined Ferrari after leaving Aston Martin’s Silverstone-based organisation. He will work as a Chassis Stress Engineering Specialist, adding further expertise to the structural side of Ferrari’s chassis department.
The appointments support the wider development programme overseen by Fred Vasseur and Loïc Serra. Ferrari has already adopted a race-by-race development approach for the SF-26, making additional engineering resources important as the team balances its immediate championship objectives with preparations for future cars.
New engineers arrive in time for Ferrari’s 2027 F1 project
In addition to strengthening the team during the final part of the 2026 season, the new engineers are joining Maranello at an important moment for Ferrari’s next Formula 1 car. They will reinforce the technical group led by Loïc Serra, which has defined the principal characteristics of the 2027 single-seater and is expected to begin its development programme in the coming weeks.
The timing could therefore allow the latest recruits to contribute from an early stage of the project. The 2027 car is likely to carry significant expectations within Maranello as Ferrari seeks to build on the foundations established under Loïc Serra and provide Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc with machinery capable of competing regularly at the front.
Ferrari is also attempting to connect its current development work with its longer-term plans. The relationship between the SF-26 programme and Ferrari’s 2027 Formula 1 project makes the arrival of additional chassis specialists particularly relevant.
Further Ferrari technical appointments are expected
Ferrari has not officially announced the arrival of Luciano Nicomede or Carlos Sánchez Martínez. Instead, both engineers revealed their moves through updates published on their respective professional profiles, confirming that they had joined Ferrari’s racing division.
The recruitment campaign is not believed to be complete. While remaining within the restrictions imposed by Formula 1’s budget cap, Fred Vasseur has reportedly secured several other specialists who could arrive or be announced in the coming weeks.
Some of those future appointments could involve more prominent figures than the two engineers already identified. Current indications suggest that Ferrari’s recruitment drive could ultimately bring five or six new technical personnel to Maranello.
The additions underline Fred Vasseur’s determination to strengthen the organisation around Loïc Serra. After a first half of the season that delivered victories but also exposed repeated shortcomings, Ferrari is seeking the specialist knowledge and greater technical depth required to turn the SF-26’s potential into more consistent results.
