Alpine and the Request for Power Unit Rebalance
During the Friday session at the 7.004-kilometre Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Stavelot, Belgium, a highly significant F1 Commission meeting took place, featuring a remarkably extensive agenda. Among the debated points, aside from the increase in CapEx (Capital Expenditure) requested by Williams to align with other teams in terms of infrastructure generation, there was also Alpine’s request to make adjustments to their power unit.
This was intended to offset what the French constructor currently estimates as a noticeable power disparity, placing the A523 at a disadvantage.
Red Bull expressed relative support for allowing Alpine to intervene with their power unit, but the matter remained unresolved, as Helmut Marko revealed. The team principal of Mercedes, Toto Wolff, emphasized that, from his perspective, any concessions granted to the French constructor other than additional hours for dynamic bench development would essentially constitute a form of BoP (Balance of Performance), a practice entirely foreign to Formula 1. The objective in Formula 1 is not to ‘equalize’ performance but to let meritocracy establish the balance of power on the track.
Frederic Vasseur’s Opinion
The team principal of Ferrari, Frederic Vasseur, also shared his views on the matter and aligned himself with his friend Toto Wolff. “Regarding Power Units, when the freeze on development until the next generation of engines was voted upon in 2023, we decided to make an exception for those in need of recovery,” explained the French manager in an interview with Autosprint. “That being said, I don’t believe that Renault (Alpine) is so far behind the others. If we need to do something to achieve performance convergence, we cannot head in the direction of granting greater fuel flow into the engine. For instance, the teams at the bottom of the standings have more hours in the wind tunnel and greater development possibilities” – the Ferrari boss pointed out.

“This is the proper way to help them improve, rather than simply reducing weight from their cars. We must provide those who are lagging behind the opportunity to develop their engines, but not to give them other types of advantages over their competitors.” – Fred Vasseur concluded.
