The unfortunate moment for Ferrari in terms of communication, not just strategies, seems to continue. In fact, during the Belgian GP, Xavier Marcos Padros, Charles Leclerc’s race engineer, made an error in communicating to the Monegasque driver what the positions on the track were at that time.
Radio communications between the pit wall and the Ferrari drivers have been one of the most discussed issues this season, especially as regarding the relationship between the Monegasque and his track engineer. Xavier Marcos has in fact been criticized for too many mistakes in giving information to Charles Leclerc, with the Monegasque often forced to correct him.
This is the transcript of the radio team between Charles Leclerc and Xavier Marcos in the early stages of the 2022 Belgian GP, during the Safety Car period. Both Charles and Verstappen were forced to start from the back due to the penalties received for using new power unit elements. However, the Dutchman immediately proved to have a considerably better race pace than the rest of the grid, so much so that in a few laps he managed to complete the comeback and take the lead, going on to secure an easy win.
Charles Leclerc: “What are the positions?”
Xavier Marcos: “Right now you are P10, Verstappen P8. Up front we have Stroll with medium tires, Verstappen… “
CL: “No! Verstappen is in front of me “
XM: “Yes, you are P9”.
A radio exchange which, although irrelevant to the outcome of the race, shows a certain amount of superficiality that is not seen, for example, in the team radio communications between Max Verstappen and his track engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase.
