McLaren will occupy the entire front row for Sunday’s Grand Prix: Lando Norris beats Oscar Piastri to secure Pole Position on Italian Saturday. Russell puts Mercedes on the second row ahead of Charles Leclerc, with Carlos Sainz and Hamilton on the third row. Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez will start from the fourth row: here are the results and summary of the Italian GP qualifying at Monza.
Q1
After the first ten minutes, Norris leads the group with a time of 1:19.911, with Charles Leclerc in second, 163 milliseconds behind. Verstappen is third, three-tenths back, followed by the two Mercedes of Russell and Hamilton, four and five-tenths behind Norris, respectively. Piastri is sixth, just 11 milliseconds behind Hamilton. Colapinto had a good first lap, placing thirteenth. On the other hand, Perez struggled, finishing sixteenth, 1.2 seconds off, and Sainz made a mistake exiting Lesmo 2.
The Spanish Ferrari driver quickly returned to the track on used tires and moved up to P3, 238 milliseconds behind Norris. Piastri, Verstappen, and the Mercedes drivers returned to the track on used soft tires, while Ferrari and Norris remained in the pits. The Australian took the third spot, while the Dutchman slowed down just after exiting the last corner. Russell moved up to fifth place, and Perez saved himself by setting the ninth fastest time on new soft tires.
There was a lot of movement in the elimination zone: Ricciardo knocked out Tsunoda, Magnussen’s slowdown caused a yellow flag, preventing Bottas and Stroll from improving their times; finally, an off-track moment at Lesmo 2 ruined Colapinto’s qualifying, leaving him in eighteenth.
Q2
Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time with 1:19.641, ahead of Norris by 86 milliseconds and Piastri by 167. Verstappen was fourth and Russell fifth, 233 and 236 milliseconds behind the leading Briton. Sixth and seventh place went to the Ferraris on used tires, trailing by six and a half tenths; Perez, Hulkenberg, and Albon completed the top ten after the first attempt. Alonso, Magnussen, Gasly, Ocon, and Ricciardo were eliminated. Ferrari quickly went back out on new tires: Carlos Sainz took third, one and a half tenths behind, and Leclerc seventh, over three tenths back.
Verstappen returned to the track and set the second fastest time, 21 milliseconds behind Hamilton, while Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz chose to stay in the pits. Mercedes and Charles Leclerc did not improve, and Perez slightly lowered his time to qualify ahead of Albon and Hulkenberg. Alonso couldn’t pull off a miracle, missing qualification by 10 milliseconds; Ricciardo, Magnussen, Gasly, and Ocon were also eliminated.
Q3
First attempt: McLaren flexed its muscles, putting both cars in first and second positions: Norris beat Piastri with a time of 1:19.401 by 35 milliseconds. Mercedes followed with Russell one and a half tenths back, and Hamilton two tenths behind. The provisional third row was held by Ferrari, with Carlos Sainz three-tenths behind and Leclerc just three milliseconds off the Spaniard’s time. Perez, on used tires, was seventh, six-tenths down, and Verstappen eighth, just ten milliseconds behind the Mexican. The Dutchman complained about a lack of grip with this tire set. Hulkenberg was ninth, and Albon tenth.
Second attempt: Max Verstappen improved but could only manage seventh. Norris lowered his time to 1:19.327, while Oscar Piastri did not improve. George Russell moved up to third, just four milliseconds behind the Australian, with a good lap from Charles Leclerc in P4 ahead of Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton. Sergio Perez made a mistake exiting Lesmo 2, and Albon overtook Hulkenberg for the fifth-row battle.
