Night falls at Yas Marina, and it’s time for the last qualifying session of the season. Let’s briefly review what happened during the session. In Q1, the drivers take to the track on soft tires to set their first lap times, with Sainz setting the fastest time at 1:23.487, followed by Max Verstappen and Kevin Magnussen, with the Haas showing a very fast car again, just like yesterday.
The track improves considerably in the final moments of the first part of the session, with many drivers improving their performances. The drivers eliminated in Q1 are: Albon, Zhou, Hamilton, Colapinto, and Doohan. The seven-time world champion unexpectedly didn’t make it through, likely due to a sensor issue on his car which impacted his time.
In Q2, Max Verstappen was the only driver not to set a second lap, stopping the clock at 1:22.998. However, the fastest time of the session was set by Carlos Sainz, followed by his Maranello teammate Charles Leclerc, whose time was deleted due to track limits at turn 1, dropping him to thirteenth and, due to the penalty, starting from the back of the grid. The drivers eliminated in Q2, besides the Monegasque, were: Tsunoda, Lawson, Stroll, Leclerc, and Magnussen.
Q3 starts with big sparks flying: Max Verstappen is ahead despite losing the car in the final corner, followed by Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz. Piastri’s first lap time was canceled due to track limits. On the final attempt, Lando Norris comes out on top, followed by Oscar Piastri and Carlos Sainz. Fourth is an impressive Nico Hulkenberg, and fifth is Max Verstappen.
