The Ferrari 677 car, the code name for the 2025 Formula 1 single-seater, has passed its first major test: the chassis was reportedly homologated before Christmas by the FIA after the new structure passed crash tests (static ones in Maranello and the dynamic one at the CSI facility in Bollate). The 2025 car, which will be entrusted to Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, has thus received the International Federation’s approval to make its track debut on February 19 at Fiorano, Ferrari’s home circuit.
The Scuderia has decided to change the new Ferrari compared to the SF-24, which raced this year, achieving five victories and securing second place in the Constructors’ Championship, just 14 points behind McLaren.
The engineers in Maranello have opted for a layout different from the Ferrari that performed well in the recently concluded season. The goal is not to wait for the new 2026 regulations for lightweight cars to aim for the world title, as initially planned by Chairman John Elkann, but to take advantage of the last championship with ground-effect cars to target both championship crowns.
The 677, according to unconfirmed reports, will feature a chassis with a cockpit positioned further back and a shorter gearbox casing to enable a weight distribution aimed at better tire utilization with a revised placement of key components.
Pirelli has developed tires designed to reduce overheating and allow for more aggressive race stints with fewer management phases. Ferrari has been among the teams that have collaborated most closely with the sole supplier, meaning the drivers’ feedback from the track has likely helped shape the direction of the new Ferrari.
The 677 will return to a pull-rod front suspension system, revisiting a concept previously used in Maranello, last seen on the SF15-T in 2015. This decision appears to be driven more by aerodynamic considerations than mechanical ones, aligning with trends already set by Red Bull and McLaren.
The new Ferrari is thus in an advanced stage of construction, adhering to the timelines set by the technical staff led by Loic Serra. The customary debut at Fiorano on February 19 will precede the cars’ shipment to Bahrain in time for the collective testing sessions scheduled in preparation for the season opener in Australia on March 16.
