The battle for second place in the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship has become one of the most compelling fights of the closing stages of the season. With Kimi Antonelli firmly in control at the top, attention is increasingly shifting to George Russell, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, who are separated by only 17 points.
George Russell currently holds second place with 238 points, but Lewis Hamilton has closed to within nine points for Ferrari on 229. Max Verstappen remains firmly involved as well, sitting fourth on 221. Three different driving approaches and three very different technical projects are therefore converging in a fight that could remain open until the final rounds.
George Russell holds the advantage for Mercedes
George Russell’s position could have been more comfortable without the reliability problems that have affected several stages of his season. Those setbacks prevented the British driver from fully managing the advantage he had built over his rivals during the opening races, unlike Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli.
Recent post-race comments have also reflected some frustration with a Mercedes W17 that has not always reproduced the outright performance it displayed at the beginning of the year. Even so, the overall technical solidity of the Brackley package remains one of George Russell’s biggest assets as he attempts to protect second place.
With such small margins separating the leading contenders, every result now carries greater importance. The evolving points picture can be explored through the F1 Championship Points Calculator, which helps illustrate how quickly the order can change during the final part of the season.
Lewis Hamilton gains momentum as Ferrari improves
Lewis Hamilton has found a stronger level of confidence with Ferrari during this phase of the season, giving the Scuderia a realistic opportunity to attack second place in the Drivers’ Championship.
The latest aerodynamic updates introduced at Maranello have improved the SF-26’s stability on corner entry, an area that suits the seven-time World Champion’s driving style. After a couple of Grands Prix that revived hopes of a stronger Ferrari challenge, the possibility of putting Kimi Antonelli under sustained pressure quickly faded, but Lewis Hamilton has continued to maximise the package available to him.
That has allowed the British driver to accumulate a series of strong results and reduce the gap to George Russell to just nine points. Ferrari’s recent technical direction therefore matters not only for individual race results, but also for the championship battle developing immediately behind Kimi Antonelli.
The Scuderia’s wider performance against Mercedes and Red Bull can also be followed through the Ferrari vs F1 Rivals statistics, which provide a broader comparison of the leading teams across the season.
Max Verstappen remains a threat despite Red Bull limitations
Max Verstappen sits on 221 points, only eight behind Lewis Hamilton and 17 behind George Russell. The Dutch driver has been limited by a Red Bull package that has lost ground in development compared with some of its rivals, with the car at times proving difficult to manage and lacking aerodynamic load.
Even so, Max Verstappen’s approach has changed little. With realistic championship hopes set aside, his focus has increasingly shifted towards individual race victories.
His aggression on track and his ability to extract performance from a difficult car continue to make him a serious threat to both British drivers ahead. When Red Bull gives him enough performance to attack, Max Verstappen has repeatedly shown that he can turn opportunities into major results.
There is also a precedent behind his late-season threat. A year earlier, Red Bull’s technical recovery allowed Max Verstappen to climb back through the championship order during the second half of the campaign, reinforcing the idea that a strong development finish can still transform the standings.
Why George Russell remains the slight favourite for second
On balance, George Russell remains the narrow favourite to secure second place in the final 2026 championship standings. Mercedes still has the benefit of an established technical base, while the British driver holds the points advantage and therefore does not need to chase the same level of recovery as his rivals.
But the margin is small enough that the balance could change quickly. Lewis Hamilton’s recent upward trajectory with Ferrari has brought him within striking distance, while Max Verstappen remains close enough to capitalise if either of the drivers ahead suffers a difficult weekend.
For Ferrari, the battle has particular significance. A strong finish from Lewis Hamilton would provide another indication that the Scuderia’s recent development work is producing results, even if Kimi Antonelli has already built a commanding advantage at the top of the standings.
George Russell therefore has the numbers on his side for now, but Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen are close enough to ensure that second place remains very much alive heading into the final part of the Formula 1 season.
