Ferrari has confirmed its intention to introduce a major upgrade package for the 499P ahead of the 2027 FIA World Endurance Championship season, as reported today by Sportscar365. The technical overhaul will be executed through the simultaneous use of three Evo Jokers. This strategic decision will allow the Maranello-based manufacturer to complete the most significant technical evolution of its Hypercar since its competitive debut back in 2023.
The announcement was made by Ferdinando Cannizzo, Ferrari’s Head of Endurance Race Cars, on the eve of official track activities for the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2026, where the Italian constructor is currently chasing its fourth consecutive victory in the French endurance classic.
While several rival competitors in the Hypercar category have already deployed a portion of their allotted Evo Jokers during the 2026 season, Ferrari preferred to follow a different development path, delaying significant interventions to formulate a broader, highly coordinated update packaging concept.
The words of Cannizzo
“We knew that this year we would have to deal with new tires and numerous different variables,” Cannizzo explained. “For this reason, we wanted to focus on the overall integration of the car, making sure that all systems worked in perfect harmony.”
The Ferrari chief then clarified the precise philosophy behind their upcoming deployment of the Evo Jokers: “Instead of using them individually, we decided to use them together to create a profoundly evolved car.”
No new homologation required
Cannizzo also specified that Ferrari will not build a completely brand-new Hypercar from scratch, but will instead deliver a substantial revision of the existing project by combining multiple technical updates, without triggering or benefiting from an entirely new homologation cycle.
“Every component of the car is linked to the others. If we modify, for example, the rear suspension, the effects also impact other areas of the car,” he explained.
“We have therefore chosen to intervene on various aspects in an integrated manner, following the exact same approach used during the original design phase of the 499P. Over the past few years, we have gained a much deeper understanding of the car and have identified its main areas for improvement, not as separate elements but as part of a single ecosystem.”
Since the initial rollout of the 499P, Ferrari has spent only one of the five Evo Jokers available to manufacturers until the end of the current Hypercar regulatory cycle, which runs through 2027. The sole update utilized by Maranello so far featured a redesign of the brake cooling ducts, which was introduced at the 6 Hours of São Paulo in 2024.
Despite theoretically having four remaining Jokers at their disposal for use by 2027, Ferrari does not intend to expend them all. Cannizzo explicitly hinted that the technical development roadmap calls for the strategic implementation of three upgrades rather than four.
In summary, Ferrari’s calculated approach to its Hypercar development path underscores a preference for long-term engineering synergy over reactionary updates. By grouping three Evo Jokers into a singular, highly integrated package for 2027, Maranello intends to fundamentally elevate the 499P baseline, ensuring the multi-time Le Mans winners remain at the absolute pinnacle of endurance racing for years to come.
