23 March in Ferrari history: Kimi Räikkönen’s Malaysian victory
23 March brings together two Malaysian Grand Prix podiums from different Ferrari seasons. Kimi Räikkönen won at Sepang on this date in 2008, while Rubens Barrichello had finished second at the same circuit five years earlier.
2008: Kimi Räikkönen wins the Malaysian Grand Prix
Kimi Räikkönen completed the 56-lap race ahead of Robert Kubica and Heikki Kovalainen. His winning margin of 19.570 seconds reflected a convincing afternoon for the reigning world champion.
The result was less rewarding for the other side of the Ferrari garage, as Felipe Massa retired. Ferrari therefore left Sepang with a victory but without the combined points haul that a finish for both cars could have produced.
For Kimi Räikkönen, the race added a Malaysian victory to his Ferrari record after his championship-winning first season with the team. Our Kimi Räikkönen Formula 1 records and statistics show where it sits among his career achievements.
2003: Rubens Barrichello reaches the Sepang podium
The Malaysian Grand Prix also took place on 23 March in 2003. Rubens Barrichello finished second for Ferrari, with Michael Schumacher classified sixth.
Comparing the two editions gives this date a clear Sepang connection: a Ferrari podium in 2003 and a Ferrari victory in 2008, achieved by different drivers.
