Ferrari on 29 August: Michael Schumacher’s seventh title at Spa
29 August 2004 marks the day Michael Schumacher secured his seventh Drivers’ World Championship. Second place in the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps was enough to settle the title, while Rubens Barrichello finished third to put both Ferraris on the podium.
The result completed Michael Schumacher’s sequence of five consecutive drivers’ championships with Ferrari, achieved between 2000 and 2004.

Race, qualifying, Sprint and Ferrari driver biographical dates are generated from the locally processed F1DB dataset. A championship secured with second place
Michael Schumacher did not need to win the 2004 Belgian Grand Prix to become champion. Kimi Räikkönen won the race for McLaren, with the Ferrari drivers completing the podium.
The distinction makes this anniversary notable: it celebrates a championship secured through the accumulated strength of a season, rather than a Ferrari race victory on the day.
Five consecutive Ferrari drivers’ titles
The seventh championship of Michael Schumacher’s career was his fifth with the Scuderia. His earlier titles in 1994 and 1995 had come with Benetton.
Ferrari had already secured the 2004 Constructors’ Championship at the preceding Hungarian Grand Prix. Spa therefore settled the remaining drivers’ crown and completed another championship double for the team.
Spa results from other seasons
The Belgian Grand Prix also took place on 29 August in 1993, 1999 and 2010. Those editions brought different outcomes, including fourth place for Eddie Irvine in 1999 and fourth for Felipe Massa in 2010.
The calendar brings the separate race classifications together while preserving the special significance of the 2004 championship result.
