What we are experiencing promises to be a very important week for Formula 1. Obviously, everyone’s eyes are on the race weekend at Silverstone, but Thursday’s event should also not be underestimated: in the afternoon, the top motorsport category will present the scale model in live streaming (on Facebook and You Tube) of the car that will characterize the new era of Formula 1 from 2022 onwards.
Important topics on which Ferrari racing director Laurent Mekies shared his thoughts through a video that appeared on the Italian side’s social media channels: “This year we will have the opportunity to test a new format over the course of three different weekends. At Silverstone we will have our first experience” – the Ferrari racing director explains, presenting the novelty of the weekend – “The starting grid of the Sprint Race on Saturday will be given by the result emerging from Friday’s qualifying. A 100-kilometer race that will decree the starting grid for the actual Grand Prix.”
The objectives that Formula 1, FIA and team leaders have set themselves are also explained: “By maintaining the traditional qualifying and adding a mini-race to the main event on Saturday, we hope to offer an improved show for the fans. We are eager to see what happens over the weekend, the impact this will have on team dynamics and how the drivers adapt to the challenges. It will be a very exciting event.” – Laurent Mekies continued.
A short and concise statement in order to address a more important topic. The 2022 regulations represent a new starting point that technicians and teams will have to be able to exploit properly in order to bring the name of their team to the top. For Ferrari, more than an opportunity it is a must. With the last few years spent competing for modest goals, with only the points zone as a target (we are referring to 2020 and 2021), 2022 is seen as the best chance of returning to challenge at the top and putting the drivers in a position to fight for titles.
“Next year we will probably see the biggest change that Formula 1 has seen in the last few decades,” says Laurent Mekies, bringing to light another aspect that we tend to overlook. “The car will be completely new and our power unit will also undergo a very important evolution: we will use a more environmentally friendly fuel”. As early as 2021, Formula 1 switched to using the more sustainable E10 fuels. The goal is to become carbon neutral by 2025. A gradual process that plans to make, at least this is the general line for now, the new power unit project precisely on the use of zero CO2 emissions fuels.
“All this will translate into a leap into the unknown”, the Ferrari technician prepares to conclude, “both for us as a team and as constructors. All the teams started from a blank sheet and it will be interesting to see the fruits of our hard work when we find ourselves at the start of the first race.” – Ferrari racing director Laurent Mekies concluded.
