The new Scuderia Ferrari team principal, which will most likely be Frederic Vasseur, has to focus on prioritising the relationship between its two drivers, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz in the 2023 Formula One season. This is the view of former Ferrari boss and current F1 chief executive officer Stefano Domenicali.
During the last two years, under the leadership of Mattia Binotto, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz have enjoyed a positive working relationship in Maranello, despite the fact that many in the Formula 1 world see the Monegasque as the top Ferrari driver. Mattia Binotto made sure that Carlos Sainz enjoyed an equal status until now.
“Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen have been at the top of the world for a long time,” Stefano Domenicali, who was Ferrari team principal until 2014, said in a recent interview for the Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport – “Charles and Carlos can certainly get there and they have what it takes to succeed. Their partnership in Maranello can last a long time and this would help them, and also the team, to grow. But in Formula 1, your teammate is your first opponent, so the future cooperation depends on how their relationship will be managed,” Stefano Domenicali continued.
“That is an important theme that the new team boss will have to address immediately, because it is delicate.”
The one who will most likely replace Mattia Binotto at the top of the Ferrari Formula 1 Racing Division is the current Sauber-Alfa Romeo boss Frederic Vasseur, who is rumoured to have already bought a house near Maranello.

Asked to comment on the Italian side’s decision to change its F1 management at the end of the 2022 season, Stefano Domenicali said: “Such choices can also yield benefits. Ferrari must now find a new balance with a new team boss. Continuity is of course more effective, so it may take some time to see real results,” he warned.
Regarding the future of Mattia Binotto, according to the Italian media, the Maranello team wants to pay him a million euros if he turns down every offer from rival teams until the end of the 2023 championship: “He has the qualities to continue his career at a high level.” – the F1 chief executive officer concluded.
