It will take Ferrari “three years” to put its championship ambitions back on track.
That is the view of former Ferrari driver and F1 legend Gerhard Berger, who is currently recovering from emergency surgery to remove his appendix.
“The doctor was quite excited when he look at the x-rays,” the 61-year-old Austrian told Bild newspaper. “‘Mr Berger, you need an operation and I’m talking about the next two hours’.”
Berger said he left hospital the next day.
When asked by the Swiss newspaper Blick about the fate of his former team Ferrari, Gerhard Berger answered: “They will certainly need three years to return to the top.”
In the latest Motor Sport podcast, the Austrian, who had two spells with the team, says that its “fully Italian” approach cannot work in modern grand prix racing.
“When I’ve been there the big wish of Ferrari as an Italian team is always to try to perform to win championships as an Italian team — all Italians and performing as fully Italian,” says Berger – “I say today, it’s not possible. F1 is so complicated, so high level, you need the best guys in the world, wherever you find him, get and put him in, it doesn’t matter which nationality. In the end of the day, the championship goes back to Italy anyway.”
