Ferrari face tricky team dynamics after Lewis Hamilton challenges Charles Leclerc in China
The internal atmosphere at Ferrari has become one of the most intriguing storylines of the 2026 Formula 1 season, following Lewis Hamilton’s intense battle with Charles Leclerc at the Chinese Grand Prix. The showdown highlighted the delicate balance the Scuderia must maintain between its two elite drivers.
Charles Leclerc has held the position of Ferrari’s number one driver since his arrival in Maranello in 2019, replacing Kimi Raikkonen. From the outset, the Monegasque established himself alongside four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel and later continued to lead the team next to Carlos Sainz. Leclerc’s authority in the team was unquestioned—until Lewis Hamilton joined Ferrari in 2025.
Hamilton initially struggled to adapt to the Scuderia during the final year of the ground-effect era, a car configuration he openly disliked. Leclerc dominated their early head-to-head encounters, leaving Hamilton to adjust and rediscover the rhythm that made him a seven-time world champion. However, the 2026 F1 regulations have provided a turning point. With a smaller, more agile chassis, the Briton has regained his confidence, showing the form that fans once celebrated for over a decade. After the Chinese Grand Prix, just a single championship point separates Hamilton and Leclerc, underscoring how tightly matched the pair have become.
Managing a delicate situation at Ferrari
Hamilton’s assertiveness during the Shanghai Sprint on Saturday annoyed Leclerc, serving as a preview for their main race battle for the final podium spot on Sunday. In the Grand Prix itself, the Briton edged out his teammate after a tense, back-and-forth duel, finishing 3.627 seconds ahead to claim P3—his first podium as a Ferrari driver.
While the performance of the seven-time F1 world cham confirmed his return to top form and demonstrated his ability to extract consistent pace from the Ferrari SF-26, Formula Tecnica has reported that the battle with Leclerc has exposed a sensitive internal scenario at Maranello. The Scuderia now faces the challenge of balancing team dynamics carefully, ensuring that competition between Hamilton and Leclerc drives performance without destabilizing the garage.
Hamilton rising to match Leclerc in qualifying
Beyond race performance, Hamilton has also started to close the gap to Leclerc in qualifying sessions, traditionally Leclerc’s stronghold. In 2025, Hamilton lost 19-5 to Leclerc across Grand Prix qualifying sessions, but early in 2026, the British driver is proving far more competitive. At the Australian GP, the Briton was just 0.151 seconds slower than Leclerc in Q3, and in China, he actually outpaced the Monegasque by 0.013 seconds.
During Sprint Qualifying in Shanghai, Leclerc was 0.367 seconds slower than Hamilton, giving the Briton an early 1-0 lead in the head-to-head qualifying battle, a marked shift from last year’s 4-2 advantage for Leclerc. Although the season is still in its infancy, with only two of 22 rounds completed, the signs are clear: Ferrari now has two drivers capable of matching each other, raising both the stakes and the excitement within the team.
As the 2026 season progresses, Ferrari must navigate this evolving dynamic with precision. Ensuring harmony while leveraging the intense competition between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc could be crucial for securing consistent results and maximizing their chances in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships.
